The Last Witch Hunter [Blu-ray + DVD + Digital HD]

Not sure why the critics have such an issue with this movie as I enjoyed it thoroughly. The niche that this movie is trying to fit into (dark fantasy) is a tough one and the movie does an exceptional job of blending action with imagination. If you watch the short animated films that go with this movie and learn more of the backstory, you will see that they did a great job of building a fictional history for the antagonists/protagonists and the characters were given meaning and histories. This isn't an extravagant Peter Jackson LOtR or Hobbit trilogy-type epic and it isn't pretending to be. Nor is this a hack & slash romp like Van Helsing but instead is a well crafted, well acted and very entertaining movie if you have what so many critics seem to be lacking these days...an imagination. The costumes and sets were perfect for the film and the interaction between the main characters (other than a somewhat weak performance by Elijah Wood) were very entertaining to watch. And yes, I grew up in the 70's and early 80's playing D&D so I can see where Vin Diesel is coming from with his character. Here's one viewer that is hoping for a sequel.

I liked the movie although I think Vin Diesel's performance wasn't that strong, and not a fan of Elijah Wood's character. (Don't get me wrong. I like both actors a lot. Just a bit weak as the main character and sidekick - lacking chemistry.) The chemistry between Vin and Michael Caine was great; I wish there was more of them together. I liked the storyline, especially the fantasy world they created. I would have loved to see more of the witch world / shops and such. The bar set was really beautifully done; I liked Chloe's apartment as well as her secret garden. ;-) Rose Leslie was great in this movie - Chloe is my favorite character. The chemistry between Vin and Rose was good. Julie Engelbrecht as Witch Queen was very well done. Well performed and great make-up / costume. I would have loved to see more of Bronwyn, the teenage witch on the plane (played by Bex Taylor-Klaus). I think this character could have brought some humor/edge to the storyline. A true sidekick. (If there was a sequel, she would have been great in it!!) If they make a tv show, with more "good" witches joining on the fight, I'd watch it. It would be nice to see their world more flushed out. There seems to be a glut of movies coming out lately where you seem to wait an age before you can understand, or even like the characters, or wait for the story, to start. .............. "SO THANK HEAVENS FOR THIS ONE!". This is a good film and I found myself intrigued with it after just 5 minutes. There is so much going on at the start and it carries on throughout the movie...................MAYBE SPOILERS AHEAD! . Vin Diesel is well cast as the Witch Hunter who has been cursed with eternal life and now works for the church in finding and vanquishing witches. How he became cursed happens at the beggining in dramatic style. The other actors add to the scenes and take nothing away. The atmosphere is dark and gothic and the whole movie is well shot. i think one of my favourite scenes is the boy and the tree. " I'm trying not to give anything away here! " There will be a sequel and i believe it is already in the making. Yes, this is a good movie which I would watch again. Something I can't say about most films that are turned out these days

It is unusual to see Vin Diesel in this type of film but he carries it off adequately enough. the film opens with a group of men hunting the Witch that has killed god knows how many people with plague. One by one everyone is killed except Vin Diesel (Called Kaulder in the film) and he finally confronts the witch responsible for killing his wife and child only to be cursed with eternal life by the witch on her death. He goes through centuries fighting the Witches where he finds them until a witch with very strong powers wants to bring back the Witch Queen he killed all those centuries ago A very clever film that has a surprising twist at the end you will not see coming. a very watchable film and Vin is well cast too alongside some very believable characters for me this gets a 10 from 10
