Not a Great Read- A MUST READ- LEST WE FORGET!
When the Cherry Blossoms Fell by Jennifer Maruno : "What is a Dirty Jap?"Michiko asked....Sadie pulled Michiko away from Ted. "Listen , Michiko," she said, spinning her around to face her. "The lesson you learned at school today wasn't about arithmetic. It was current events."...."Canada is at war with Japan after Japan bombed Pearl Harbor in the United States," she continued. "For some reason, people think all Japanese people are enemies." ..."Stop it," cried Eiko. ..."The government made new laws for the Japanese every week. We weren't to have cameras or radios. Then we couldn't have cars or boats."..."We couldn't go to certain stores. Japanese children couldn't go to public schools or use the libraries. They even shut down the schools that taught Japanese culture and language."This is the world young Michiko finds herself in , in Canada in March of 1942. Then the 🇨🇦Government takes her Father away. The author knows her story inside and out. The first in this three part series is ; well written, descriptive and compelling. With wisdom the author shows the young reader the other side of adversity- the ability of the human spirit to be thankful. I finished the book in an afternoon and part of an evening. The story was too important to put down. Not a Great Read - A MUST READ! Historical Fiction with a Powerful Message for Today! - Lest We Forget! #thechildren #whenthecherryblossomsfell #jennifermaruno #middlegradeseries

Love Michiko's Spirit
When Cherry Blossoms Fell is a thoughtful account of life inside the Japanese Internment Camps in Canada during World War II, as seen through the eyes of nine year old Michiko Minagawa. Ms. Maruno treats a sensitive subject with understanding, insight and humour. It's not hard to fall in love with the main character and hope for a better life for herself and her family. The book left me wanting to run out and buy the second book in the series, Cherry Blossom Winter.

Stunning
When the Cherry Blossoms Fell is a stunning novel about a regretful part of Canadian history. I read it as part of a curriculum writing team and the book is just RICH with vocabulary & culture, including a glossary of all Japanese words used in the book. There were so many opportunities for teaching points that we had a hard time choosing where to focus. The Author is a retired teacher and who plays to the the interests of students, curriculum, and fellow educators. A must read!
