The Nation's Favourite Poems

Missing at least one poem!
I bought the book specifically because the back cover says that it includes "Do Not Stand at My Grave and Weep". That poem was deleted from the edition that I received, probably because of a copyright war when its authorship was debated. This emphasized a problem with buying used books on Amazon . . . the description and reviews often relate to a different publication and/or revision than the copy you get. This particular book has several different publishers over the years and that is very obvious by the vastly different cover art they may have. In my case, I successfully returned the book for a full refund.

The Nation's Favourite Poems
I have already written a review about this - last time I ordered one - or was it the time before? I love this book and have owned a copy four times; each time I give it away to someone that I'm fond of and feel that they would like it just as much as I do.I still like the same poems - I have my favourites and there's such a variety... romantic ones, dramatic ones, pompous ones, sad ones and very, very cheeky ones. A great little book. Perhaps I can hold onto this one.

The Best!
This book is an awesome collection of some of the best poems! A friend let me her copy and every time I tried to give it back I would read another page or two and want to keep it. I had to have my own copy.

Old favourite with some surprises
I would have loved it to have been bigger! Lovely memories, nostalgia and pleasure. I didn't realise just how much I enjoy poetry, especially poetry from my own country.

A sterling collection.
A BBC book in which the poems originate from a Television programme survey in the mid 90's. A collection of 100 poems in all and many are recognisable and from poets from around the globe. Personal highlights would have to be "How do I love thee?", "Cargoes", "The Owl and the Pussycat" and "The Raven". You will surprise yourself with your knowledge of poetry and it's varied and broad appeal.

A nice, affordable collection of significant works
This book is a collection of some of the most popular poetry of modern times. The selections for the book originated from a survey in the UK conducted by the BBC. Be aware, however, that the majority of the works are from no earlier than the 18th cent. writings. Thumbing through, I'm sure you will recognize more poems than not. If your looking for a compact collection of some of the most familiar and best loved poems, this is your book. :)

One of my favourite books. Also available is The nation’s favourite Love Poems.
Great little book, some old favourites, and a few unexpected treats, like( I think it’s called ‘Cake’? Funny tale of a midnight snack. Loads of little gems, well presented, title search at the front, first line search at the back,... you know when you can remember that first line but can’t remember the rest? Absolutely brilliant!LOVE ‘The Charge Of The Light Brigade’, by the way!‘If,..’ it’s here.

Good collection
Best point: a good collection of poems, something to suit everyone. I bought this as a Christmas present for my 10 year old great nephew, who write his own poems and deserves encouragement. It looks ideal for him as he can dip in and out as he becomes older.Bad point: obviously this is a paperback edition, but even taking that into account the cover is rather flimsy and, presumably as a result, was delivered with a crease in one corner. It was particularly annoying for me as it was a gift for someone else.

A lovely introduction to poetry for the non-specialist who simply "knows what they like"!!
I ordered this for a friend who had "never got into poetry" - well she HAS now, and in fact she was so enthusiastic that I have since ordered Palgrave's Golden Treasury for her. A poetry-lover myself, I get a real thrill when somebody else "catches the bug", and this little compilation is a great introduction, since, by it's very nature, it's an eclectic anthology of accessible work. Ideal as a gift for someone who may not have studied English in-depth but simply "knows what they like". Highly recommended by me and, more importantly, my friend who now reads a poem every night before switching the light out! :-)

Great variety of poems to suit everyone.
Bought this as a gift but as I’ve owmed a copy of this myself for years... I need say no more really. Great selection of poems. Some well known but others which were new to me. Also mix of traditional and more modern. Great book for variety and something to suit all tastes. Recommended!

If you enjoyed the tv series you will love this
Brought this after watching the BBC series. There is a forward by G R Jones which is interesting and which acknowledges the Unknown Soldier poem (do not stand by my grave and weep). They are in order of most votes so Rudyard Kiplings 'If' is number 1. Also there is a first line and author index at the back. This is really helpful because sometimes you just cant place your favourite. This is a very well worn copy, I have read a few to my kids, and am very proud that they can recite Leisure, Tyger, Daffodils. I also brought Nation favourite love poems and poems of childhood but this is by far my favourite. The audio version is also very good and features John Nettles and is well worth considering.
