Black walnut hulls as well as black walnut leaves contain a compound called juglone which is toxic to many plants and animals. The tree uses this as a defense to kill or stunt nearby plants, seeds, and other organisms and increase it's own chances of survival. With that in mind I make a tea out of the crushed hulls to keep weeds down and prevent new growth of unwanted foliage.

I make ink for calligraphers. 24 hours in the slow cooker produced a beautiful dark brown ink. Buying the hulls dried and ready to use means I don't have to wait until fall/winter to find them on the ground.

I used this product to dye some brain tanned buckskin pieces I had, as well as a piece of veg. tanned cowhide. The buckskin turned out a beautiful dark brown, the cowhide a nice lighter brown, which will likely darken when oiled.
