For $50 you can't go wrong
This is my first metal detector. I don't know that I'll make a hobby out of it. I mostly wanted to locate pipes in the back yard.Having said that, it seems to be a decent unit. Of course, I haven't tried a super duper detector, so I don't know what I'm missing. But, for example, I've found a dime down at 4 inches, at the transition between the driveway and grass. No need for ground balance and such. It's automatic.I'm learning the tones and, while I can't tell you what I'm going to find given a certain tone, it does disc out iron, killing off a lot of trash. I'm now at the point that when it says something is there with disc set, it's now more interesting to dig.One thing that doesn't seem very accurate is the pin pointing. Or maybe I don't know what I'm doing. But I can get a definite signal at a definite spot, do the same orthogonally, lower the sens to define the spot better, dig the spot, only to find the signal has "moved" a few inches away. I eventually find what's there, but it's not always where it says it is. Makes for bigger holes. (Desert "soil" in Phoenix, AZ.)I went to a park for fun. If you want to coin shoot, it does fine, especially considering coins from a party the night before will be on the surface. You don't need a $500 unit for that. For a first time unit, I can't complain, especially considering the price. I read that Fisher is selling its F2 with two coils for $200 for December which sounds like a smoking deal. If you think you're going to make a hobby out of m.d., maybe it would be better to spend the money toward that. Otherwise, for an occasional unit, this is fine.

Worst device I have ever seen
The device has no English manual, luckily I can read French. It has no real sensitivity setting other than ON and OFF.It cannot detect objects unless they are right above the ground. It can't even detect a penny under a book!Waste of money, plan to return it.

Found Something More Precious Than Gold
I always had an interest in buying a metal detector but like so many other things, the idea got back burnered. Then a couple of weeks ago I was gardening in my backyard when I looked down at my hands and to my dismay discovered that my wedding ring was missing. Now I had been digging for the better part of an hour and had no idea at what point in time it had fallen off. My frantic efforts to find it were to no avail. I sat slumped for a moment and then it hit me - now more than ever is a great time to buy that metal detector you always wanted. I immediately went on-line, read a few reviews, and decided on the Bounty Hunter VLF. It arrived a week later and I couldn't wait to try it out. Assembly was very easy and it was no time before I was outside. It literally wasn't a minute before the machine beeped. I dropped to my knees, dug, and found my ring! Need I say more. The machine is the best!!!

Great for metal detecting in dirt or sand
I bought this metal detector as a fun toy to start my hobby. It works great in yards an on sandy beaches. . . Until you get close to the water. No matter how much you turn up the discrimination or "Trash eliminator" the detector still goes wild because of the iron in the water. Other than that its found a lot of cool stuff, the deepest item its found was the base to an old water pump almost one foot below ground!

Metal Detector
This product works very well for the amount of money that it costs. For anyone who is a hobbyist this is a perfect tool for what you need. It seems to be sensitive enough to pick up items that you would think would be out of reach of it, but it will surprise you. Great value for the money.

This is a toy
Great idea for a gift for a youth. I wanted this unit to locate metal property markers and was very diasappointed in this product. I was unable to find the markers with this product and gave it to my grandchildren to play with. Ended up going to the sporting goods store and buying a different unit for a few extra dollars and it worked great. If you want something to use for a hobby spend a few extra bucks and buy a better unit.
