Regular quality.
I have been painting mostly with oils for a while, heard about Centurion linen canvas from other artists. Since their products are primed with oil based primer, which is my favourite kind, I wanted to try it out.First of all, I must have missed something before buying it in a description, because I was expecting a linen stretched on wooden frame. This canvas is mounted on a cardboard. This is ok, depending on what its needed for. For a quick not very detailed painting it would work for me, as long as the oil based (OP enhanced, I’ll have to learn what it means) primer is non absorbent. And this is where the problems have began. The surface turned out to be very absorbent. First I was sketching in roughly the lines, but when trying to correct them they were straining the canvas. This does not happen on good quality oil based primed surface. After the sketching I decided to make a monochrome underpainting, and it was a real struggle. The painting was hard to spread without adding more solvent, and after that it was not sticking in to the canvas and very chalk to model. I had to go twice with solvent diluted paint to create better surface for the future applications. I am now hopeful that work will progress with less complications. In summary, it is okay canvas for the price I have payed, but there are far better oil based linen canvases or panels available that will allow to painting effortlessly from very first paint applications. And very similar experience I’ve had beginning my work on this Centurion canvas, I already had in the past, when working on store brand acrylic primed, very inexpensive canvases.Having said that, when it comes to the surface for painting it’s a very personal choice. What doesn’t works for one might work for someone else.
