Mr. Rockefeller's Roads: The Story Behind Acadia's Carriage Roads

Bought this for my husband; we visit Acadia frequently and he really enjoyed learning more about the carriage roads. The author is a descendent of the man who built the roads, and knows her stuff.

This well-written, fully documented book is essential for anyone interested in the history of Acadia National Park and especially the history and thinking behind one of the park's most distinctive features, the carriage roads. The writer is the granddaughter of John D. Rockefeller Jr., who designed the roads, financed them, and closely supervised their construction. Based on her master's thesis in landscape architecture, it presents thorough background information along with occasional reminiscences. She has an obvious and infectious affection for the park, the roads, and especially for John D. Rockefeller Jr. The book is indispensable.

After walking a number of carriage roads on MDI, I was struck by how wonderfully well designed they were. Wanted to know more and this book filled that need. This is not a guidebook but an historical view of the roads and the man behind them.

Until I read this I had no idea how long Mr. Rockefeller worked on his dream. His vision of the roads has made it possible for all future generations who visit Acadia and who ride the Carriage roads to truly see Acadia from a different perspective.

Very interesting story, but I thought it dragged a bit. However, it gives one a real appreciation for Mr Rockefeller's significant accomplishment and the subsequent efforts by others to save the roads. It is good to read about wealthy people who use their for the public good

We looked hard for a history of Acadia and we're amazed at the lack of such. Now we are happy to recommend this wonderful book.
