A high sound, not a loud sound
We got this whale for our dog over a year ago, and she loved it. It’s her best friend. She’s maybe a medium chewer; she doesn’t have super strong jaws but she’ll shred things if she gets any opportunity. It held up to constant games for at least 8 months. Eventually it started to unravel, so we put it up in a closet for a few months until we finally got around to getting her a replacement. The replacement came yesterday. She was overjoyed! Her whale was back! For a solid ten minutes she was wagging her tail as she snuggled and squeaked it. And when I asked her to “drop it” so I could throw it for her, she sharply pulled it away and did a couple head whipping motions for good measure. She definitely wasn’t going to let it out of her sight again!Look, I know it squeaks, otherwise she wouldn’t be putting in the effort to get her tiny jaws around the fat body of the whale *just right* to squeak it. But I think some of the tests people put it through might contribute to the poor reviews. It’s a high sound, not a loud sound. I remember in middle school those ringtones that were above the adult teachers’ hearing level; you could clearly hear them, and they were annoying. But you couldn’t hear it from out in the hallway, no way. This squeaker is probably the same- a high sound, not a loud sound.Even if the squeaker doesn’t work- it’s a $6 plush toy, that is perfect for a dog to grab, that holds up to a game of tug of war, in a cute marine animal shape. That’s cheaper than any Walmart stuffed animals or toys. And my dog loves it to death. This morning she has been carrying it around from room to room so she can nap with it. I guess she’s worried her favorite whale might go “missing” again. But I’ll be buying her as many as she wants.

OMG! The people on TV actually talk!
I can't decide who loves this toy more, my dog or me. She's a golden retriever and loves to carry things around in her mouth for no particular reason. This penguin is the perfect size for that. It also has a larger squeaker in it than the smaller versions of these toys, and she prefers it much more for her squeaking pleasure. All I hear when she's playing with it is a soft puff of air that I barely even notice. The squeak also doesn't bother my cats, who object (vigorously) to some of her other squeaky toys. For my part, I'm just pleased and astonished to discover that my TV shows have actual spoken dialogue. (Am I the only one who thought we were just supposed to lip read?) I wouldn't suggest that you and your dog play tug with this toy unless you want it to have a greatly abbreviated lifespan. The seams of the stomach patch appear to be the most vulnerable spot on the penguin that would affect playability. Parts of the embroidered eyes are going to become stringy with only a few catches by teeth or claws. If you have a dog who goes after strings you'll need to keep an eye on that. Also, if you have a dog who just wants to tear into toys and de-squeak them, this isn't a toy to leave her with unattended. But for dogs who mainly want to squeak, carry and shake toys (and for their parents who want to turn the TV closed captioning off), this is an awesome toy. I'm stocking up on them in time for The Walking Dead season premiere.

LOVE this toy
My dog has the habit of waking up at 6 in the morning every day of the week, finding her favorite squeak toy and then chewing it on my bed. My fiance and I don't mind that Po (dog's name) entertains herself until we get up--we think that's great, but we DID mind the noise. This toy helped us A LOT. Po LOVES THIS TOY! She plays with it for HOURS and we don't hear a thing. It's soft and squishy and silent to our human ears, so we don't have to hide it for fear of her waking us up.The only downside is that it looks like its fabric will rip relatively easily. So far it has stood up to her strong jaws, but I'm not sure how much longer it will last.

Size small is ~10 inches long. Great squeaker!
This toy is great! My dog loved it right away, so squeaking sound must be great, but all I can hear is a light puff of air. Much larger than imagined (I got the whale size small), seems close to 10 inches long and four or more inches high. It's only a couple inches wide, though, so my 15 pound toy poodle can still squeak it easily. However, I think he'd play with it more if it were smaller.Soft and cute. Appears to be well-made, but no "chew guard technology" like those indestructible dragons have, if you know what I'm referring to. I'm sure any dog could chew it apart easily if they wanted.

Not as durable as Flats, but very quiet
Sound: You can hear the puff of air, but that's about it - maybe if you have particularly amazing hearing, you might hear something? But most humans that we have encountered cannot hear it at all. Gordon (dog) does here it, and reacts as if it is identical to his normal squeaker toys. We call it an approved "Sunday Morning" toy because G will run around squeaking it to his heart's content, and we won't hear a thing (and our neighbors won't hate us). We reserve it for mornings we require sleep, and for travel (great for hotels!).Durability: Ripped open 15 minutes in. Easily stitched back together, but seams are not great (particularly the belly - see attached pic for our repair work). Much less durable than Flats version. With both this and the Gator Flats version of this toy, we frequently dislocate the squeaker: the tube becomes separated from the pouch, and when this happens, it really is silent (to human and dog ears). I figured out it's very easy to fix, though, and just jamb the tube back into the pouch (since it is "flat", though there is some stuffing to work around, it's pretty easy to maneuver). I can tell when this happens, because G will try a few times to squeak, look perplexed, and just drop the toy in favor of something that makes noise. After I fix it, he'll go back to playing with it.Washing: I'm a little afraid of messing with the squeaker by drenching it with water. I'll update if I ever get up the nerve to do it, but it has stayed surprisingly clean so far.See additional pics on the Gator version of this toy.
