It's fly line backing. If we're being honest, unless you fish saltwater, most folks won't catch a fish big enough to peel off enough line to ever see the fly line backing on the reel! Even if you do fish salt water and/or do catch fish big enough to peel off enough line to see the backing of your reel, this stuff will be more than sufficient! That aside, this is good fly line backing with some cool colors not found anywhere else to make fly line and reel colors compliment each other. It's equally as good as any other fly line backing by any other company that I've ever used and at a decent price point too. Plus, 100+ yards per spool is more than enough backing for most reels too. I've bought several spools of this stuff for my reels in different colors and I'm very satisfied with it. This stuff does fray a little after it's been cut, but so does every fly line backing that I've ever used. A little touch from a lighter to the end solves that issue. Don't let a couple of negative comments about fraying line detour from this product... I haven't had any problems with any of the spools I've bought and I think it's every bit as good as any of the big name brand manufacturers of fly line backing currently on the market, because I have and have used those too.

Honestly the backing doesn't look awful, but both ends were frayed Bout 1" to 1-1/2" up.. On top of that there was a cut and run halfway through the backing! Obviously this wasn't noticed until I was spooling it onto the reel. Pretty disappointing.Edit to just a few days later. Amazon replaced the backing with a brand new spool. Spooled it up and there were no snags or cuts. Review changed from 1 to 4 star for now... As I use this backing I will edit the review if needed. Just food for thought though, don't buy a product like this if you're in a rush to use it. If you have time ahead of you (if you run into problems) you'll be better off. Hope this helps!

The photos of this product clearly show it on a spool. The product I received was in a plastic bag, and in a tangled mess. Hours were spent untangling it as I had no other option, leaving for a fishing trip very early the next morning. I would never, ever purchase this again. After 6 hours, I managed to unravel this mess. Very disappointed. Did I receive a used product? No idea how you can claim that you take pride in your products. Unfortunately this was not a good experience with Sunshine Fishing. It made for a very dark day.

It is backing. I trout fish in the mountain states. I do not use my backing that often. If I am in my backing I probably lost control of the fish. I do not let the fish win very often. I just returned from a fishing trip and I did use the backing twice. One beat me to the punch and the other beat me. Happens. Since I had backing out, I should be able to review it. Did not break so I guess it worked. Not sure how you would know one preforms over the other. Good price and it worked.

The Purple colored line came frayed and no matter where you cut it, the weave starts to come undone. I have a the blue color as well and this hasn’t happened. This is cheap backing and not high quality, disappointing.

I used this as an inexpensive braided line on a cheap tenkara rod to see if it would work, and it does. It is not tapered so the weight can take a few casts to get used to compared to others, and it does not float as well as regular level lines. It does cast nicely however, and I may try soaking it in mineral oil to see if I can get it to float better.Worth trying at the very least and I will probably continue to use it regularly.

Backing is pretty much all the same so why buy name brand for twice the price? A nice line is super important in getting good casts but by the time you are down to the backing, all you need is strength and length.

Line worked great for stringing up my new rubber landing net basket. A lighter will take care of the frayed ends. No complaints so far the blue is a nice complimenting color to a medium color stain on my wood net.

Ordered 300m as I had a few fishing reels to back. The large reel of backing line arrived. It was labelled 100m as photo. After a lot of confusion I finally sorted out it was mislabelled and there was actually 300m on the reel. It would have had 5 stars, but for that.Good line and good value.
