So, you think you can make a difference . . .
I've been a vegan for over a decade and I have dreamed of being a vegan advocate: an advocate for the animals and an advocate for healthy living. However I've always been overwhelmed by the perceived strength of the animal agriculture business and the meat eating attitude of most of society. This book though in giving this issue of meat eating the label of "carnism" then breaking it down in how it achieves and strives to maintain its power makes it easier to understand. As a result the idea of advocacy is not so intimidating. Also in reading this book one can understand how violent practices in societies are accepted or tolerated. I would recommend this book to anyone who wishes to be a peaceful advocate.

Returning to Who We Are
The insights and ideas from “Why we love dogs” are so compelling. It’s a psychological deconstruction of a system that allows us to perpetuate animal cruelty. But it makes a clear case for the compassion and empathy that inherently exists in all of us (the gravitation toward a cow at farm, feeding animals, caring for animals/pets). We’re inherently compassionate, and we can reconnect to that compassion by resolving to look directly at animal farming. The brutality, the cruelty, pain and suffering. Directly witnessing and connecting rather than suppressing or ignoring... Simply stated, “If I had pet pig/cow/chicken that shows us it’s affection and vulnerability (like a dog), would I be comfortable inflicting intense suffering, pain, and fear to get something to eat? Would I want to eat it? Unambiguously not.”

Ordered new- super dirty
There’s nasty green crap all over it! The package was fine and dry- so this book was either used or something gross happened to it at warehouse!

Life-changing book
Years ago, when I first moved in with my wife, she introduced me to cats. I began to think differently about animals after having pets of my own. At the start of 2020, I gave up meat and as the year progressed I gave up animal products altogether. This book was part of my journey, and what it did was articulate all those feelings that I had been having about animals. Reading this book I was able to understand the the mindset and psychology of the enormus system of killing and eating animals. What this book contains is truly shocking, horrifying, and scarier than anything Stephen King could write. Few books have changed my life, but this is one of them.

Critical Reading for Vegans and/or Vegan curious Non vegans!
The work of Melanie Joy, who is a trained Psychologist, takes a very logical approach to talking through the mindset change required for waking up to carnism. Her work helps explain some reasons for resistance in non vegans, and focusses on ways to how to have effective and impactful communication strategies, when advocating for veganism. One of my key takeaways is how rattled we may feel when everything we considered normal, natural and necessary (like eating animals), is challenged.Super easy read and highly recommended!
