Should have gotten a garmin
Im an over the road trucker. There’s two major reasons why this GPS falls short for meFirst, it loses GPS signal. Often. And what good is a GPS that doesnt give your global positioning properly? Clear skies in populated areas and it loses signal. Absolutely infuriating. And this is on american roads, highways, and interstates mind you. When it loses signal, first, your speed reads zero, the icon of the truck on the map goes grey, and then it kicks itself out to the main menu (for some reason). Instead of just reconnecting and continuing the trip, you have to go back into the GPS/navigating mode. Then it asks you if youd like to resume the same trip that it dropped the signal on in the middle of. Then it connects, and youre back off to the races. So, if this sounds safe or like a well thought out convenient design to you, id be interested in hearing your explanations why.Secondly, the battery/charging is not sufficient.Say i start my day with a full battery, and leave it plugged in all day as im using it (as any other trucker would do). Well, within 3 or 4 hours, it has lost HALF its charge, despite being plugged in (and “charging”) the ENTIRE time. This is BS. Why does this happen? I will actually turn it off when im on long 100+ mile stretches of road to give it a chance to “charge back up”. Its so annoying. Ive thought about chucking it out the window because of this, but then id have to use my back up atlas (also rand mcnally, but thankfully the atlas does not take batteries or need to be plugged in to work. They should probably stick to making map books)Why does the through charging seem completely non existent on this GPS? Why does the battery deplete at all while its plugged in? It makes no sense. All i can think is how great the garmin i used to have worked. And didnt have either of these issues.

Made by the people who make the maps.
This is the second Rand McNally GPS unit I have owned. I bought this one because the GPS on my phone took me out in the middle of nowhere in an effort to save me 10 minutes on an 8-hour road trip. I had no cell phone service for over 2 hours. When my wife and I decided to drive Route 66 as a retirement trip, we both agreed to buy a new GPS so we wouldn't have the cell phone fiasco again. Is it perfect? No. But it is better than what's in second place. That might be why I bought a new one.

Overall pretty great, but has charging issues
So it's been about 4 months since I got this. Overall it's mostly great. Has some issues with directions where there's been changes in the roads as they don't seem to update it often enough. But 99% of the time is good at keeping you know what lane you need to be in, where the exits are, etc. You can permanently avoid areas, I use this to avoid toll roads my company doesn't pay for, and is fairly good at rerouting for traffic delays. You can customize routing colors and other visual features, which is kind of nice, as well as your vehicle information such as trailer height and vehicle weight to get proper routing. The size is big enough to see clearly, but not so big that it obstructs too much of your windshield. Now the big problem. I've already had replaced the charging base and cord once, and will be calling them yet again tomorrow as it's not charging again. This is a big issue as the battery doesn't last all that long without being plugged in. I think they don't make it durable enough to withstand the rough roads of the country you travel in a semi. This is an extremely aggravating issue, and unless they can successfully solve this problem I'll probably be trying to get a refund. I shouldn't have to replace key components every couple months after paying over $400 for this unit.

On the road again
My husband uses this while he drives a semi. He uses it because he thinks Randy McNally knows everything. It does have side roads and the interstate and even when he's in BFE he can find roads to get him to where he needs to be cuz a lot of times when he deliver stuff they're not on the main roads not even on the side roads they're on the little bitty curvy roads. And this device can show him where he needs to go. He's been driving now for 15 years and we've always had a Randy McNally and he loves this one.
