I love this book
This book is a fun read if you like historical nonfiction through the voice of a historian whose humorous sayings and observations sound like someone’s Caribbean uncle. I learned a lot about Trinidad and was engaged in a serious and thoughtful way but then at other times the author would say something that would make me bust out laughing. I love Eric Williams, his books, his writing style, and I’m definitely buying more of his stuff. Just be warned, the book is detail heavy so it may be a difficult read for some people. But he’s worth every second.

A great book
I'm a Trinidadian American trying to learn about my historical background. These previous reviewers convinced me to buy this book. I love it. It is verrrrry in depth. More so than I anticipated. This book helped to elucidate many facts that were unclear to me. It's not an easy read, but just take your time with it. It is a learning experience. I would have liked to learn more about the slavery of blacks and semi-slavery of Indians but it was enough information to get a taste. I'm glad with the amount of information that I acquired with this book. It is very informative. I'm not into historical studies, but I really enjoyed this book. Sometimes it was a bit tedious, but all in all very knowledgeable information. Great read for American Trinis who want to learn their heritage which is very important!

The Economics of Slavery
Well written and focused on the economics of slavery. Considerable discussion of the triangle-trade involving England, West Africa, and the Carribbean. Insight into the involvement of North American colonies and the early Republic. Altogether, an excellent foundational resource on what drove slavery and its formative influence in the rise of industrial capitalism.

GRREEAT BOOK! Not a HARDCOVER AT ALL!
I was promised this would be a great book, which it is. I was PROMISED Athis book to be a long-lasting HARDCOVER For my library:BE CAREFUL!! Twice now I ordered this book and TOLD it was a HARDCOVER!Twice Received only a wimpy softcover!Pretty weird!! When I taught Special Education, my children knew the difference between a HARDCOVER book and a softcover. These beautiful children were also handicapped. What about the writers on this book cover??NEVERTHELESS: this is really a GREAT book, starting with the early history of the people "Amerindian" in the region! Dr Eric certainly was a VERY great and VERY well educated man on so many topics for the great Tobago and Trinidad!! What a great leader, as well!!

Very Informative
Very informative book that gives a deep history of Trinidad and Tobago. Enjoying the read while teaching my parents details on things they were not taught - they both are from Trinidad. I have even more respect for the man that is Eric Williams.

One of the very few history's of Trinidad and Tobago
Incredibly well written and documented this history begins pre Columbian and ends with independence.I was shocked to learn three quarters through the book that I was a distant cousin of the author.Maybe this review is biased.

Sarcastic and interesting
I purchased this book to learn about Trinidad and Tobago before visiting on vacation. I was pleasantly surprised by Williams' wit and sarcasm. The book moves at a good pace and includes anecdotes, numbers and interesting quotes. I feel like I have an adequate grasp of TT history now that I've read this book. I actually enjoyed it so much that I ordered another of Williams' books.

Very informative
Loved the book, but I wished it covered more on the immigration of Indians to Trinidad. Incredibly informative and essential for any Trinidadian who wants to know more about the history of their nation.

I like this book because it explain the life history of Trinidad & Tobago. It is great to know the life history of other countries. It's a great book. It tell you about The Road to Independence - how Trinidad & Tobago achieved its Independence on august 31, 1962. There are interesting chapters in this book.
