Mystery School in Hyperspace: A Cultural History of DMT

I really thought this would be more interesting. The cultural history is limited to recent history in the US. The history of DMT is ancient. There are a lot of pages, but the content left me unwilling to dedicate time to completing the book thus far. In that respect, this review is unfair. But with a title like "mystery school in hyperspace" I simply expected more than documentation of Americans using dmt. I suppose the :mystery school in hyperspace" is DMT itself. You will not access it through these pages.I like the cover.The stars are how I feel about the content, but also reflect that I feel a little mislead by the title. That said, I wish the author and anyone that spreads information about substances/plants which allow humans to move beyond their limited reality all the success in the world.

I enjoyed this page-turner. It is very wide-ranging! My only minor criticism is that every now and then it reads a bit like an academic thesis, which is not surprising considering the author is an academic. Also, chapter seven “Remixtisism” was confusing to me with many references to the dance/electronic culture that would be a lot more understandable if you are part of that scene. But these are two minor complaints, it is really a good book and essential reading on the topic. Buy it!

I haven't been able to put this 'treasure chest of a book' down for days; I'm loving it so incredibly much! Graham St John did truly remarkable job researching the cultural history of DMT and his wonderful work fills an extremely valuable niche. Great artwork too! I can't recommend this amazing book more highly; if this subjects interests you, then you must read this book!

I've read plenty of books on this specific subject and didn't think there was much left to learn (from reading about it). But mystery School presents a thorough overview of DMT including the origins and early days, and its continuing mythology. It focused heavily on the Electronic music culture in a few sections, which I personally wasn't very interested in, but that didn't detract in general land would probably be right up the alley of many enthusiasts. Overall well researched and fascinating.

Mystery School in Hyperspace is THE most legitimate overview of the historical and cultural context regarding a very mysterious psychedelic neurotransmitter endogenously produced in the human body. DMT (Dimethyltryptamine) is by far one of the most important experiences that both science and spirituality will benefit by uniting in understanding. Graham St John spent a great amount of effort and eloquently produced a work of art in this non-fiction psychedelic magnum opus! Highly suggested reading material for psychonauts and heads!

If you read everything about psychedelics on the last 10 years you will find it listed in this book. A fantastic overview of every major book, trip report or strange tale is available in Mystery School. The book is really a map about all that happened around psychedelics and psychedelic music in the last 30 years along with personal stories and adventure. I really enjoyed reading it as every machine elves aficionado will too. Get a copy.

This book is truly amazing. So much research has clearly gone into it and it has all been notated with wonderfully OCD footnotes and reference guides. The cover art is much cheesier then the content matter and I wish they didn’t choose such a cliche trippy fractal spiral to represent such a great book but oh well! As they say “you can’t judge a book by its cover” Still highly recommended:)

Reads like a thriller and packed with fascinating information and anecdotes. The two chapters covering relevant music are a little hard going at times, but I know they will come in handy for checking out at some point one rainy afternoon.The book is surely a labour of love and at times highly amusing. Quite an accomplishment. If you want to find out what the atomic flash deluxe is all about this is the book for you. 5 brilliant stars.

This is an outstanding book which will no doubt become the key text for anybody interested in the DMT phenomenon. Voluminous and dense with information, it is also concise and erudite in style. Every aspect of the DMT question is researched and considered -, from the scientific, to the psychological, spiritual, neurochemical, as well as psychonautical vantage points, and all explored in a thoughtful well balanced manner. The sheer depth and scope of this work impresses the reader, with apparently every facet of the diverse history of DMT detailed - and the spheres of influence of this still mysterious molecule examined. The key figures of DMT's many allies and exponents are all well represented and considered, and the book also highlights some of the tensions and diverse perspectives encompassed within this wide subject. A thoroughly well researched and presented work, which will no doubt inform and generate debate for many years to come.

In my opinion, this the best book ever written on DMT, its history and its cultural significance. This is an amazing book and I highly recommend it to anyone with an interest in the subject. It is packed with information. It is expertly and eloquently written. It is so thoroughly researched and deep that it is hard to believe it is the work of a single author and not a team. There are dozens of new words. Almost every sentence is weighted with an understanding and a connection that I haven't found in any other of the classic and familiar works on psychedelics. I could give many many examples from the book which I found hugely significant, informative and revealing, but I wouldn't want to spoil it for you. Buy it. You will not be disappointed.
