always excellent
Alexander McCall Smith can’t miss. He is so eloquent, intellectual and engaging. I am always challenged, enthralled, and entertained with every series and cannot wait for the next book in each. Thank you!

Funniest Dialogue Ever!
This is a wonderful second installment of the new Paul Stuart series. The story has pathos, a happy ending, of course, and the dialogue is rich with clever insights, sarcasm, and humor. I think this is some of the funniest dialogue Alexander McCall Smith has written since Paul Stuart parked the bulldozer. The descriptive elements are superb. Not only could I envision the scenes of France, but i could actually feel as if i were there. Oh, and the food was, at first, dreadful ... and then exquisite! For two decades I have enjoyed reading Smith's No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency books to the exclusion of all of his others. Now that I have expanded my reading to include just one of his other series, I have come to understand that this author is so much more incredibly talented and multi-dimensional than I had perceived. I may be missing something by not having read more of his catalogue. I am looking forward to doing just that as I anxiously anticipate the third Paul Stuart book.

Just another Alexander McCall Smith story
I can't say I loved it as the characters continue to spiel monologues that have little relevance to the story. I like the quirky characters, but there is so little story to really connect them. I continue to read AMS but it always leaves me wanting for something else--many of the characters seem to blend into characters from his other series.

Great Second Book in the Series!
As always, I completely enjoyed Alexander McCall Smith's latest book in the series. I can only concur with all the reviews written about him. His stories are very charming and if you look a little deeper, you learn so much about human nature/behavior and being good people. I highly recommend these books.

More Paul Stuart, Please
I loved this book. Other reviewers have knocked it because of its "lack of plot" and the character of Chloe, Paul's cousin, whom some found annoying. I found her endearing, and the interplay between Paul and Chloe is lovely. Yes, she's a bit strong but that's something Paul has to understand and deal with. And he does, beautifully. There's a lesson here for all of us in terms of human interaction and kindess. Thank goodness we are all different. As for plot? That's not the point of an AMS book! Humanity coming to terms with life situations is the point. The author has gently opened our eyes again, without being preachy. I would like to have another excursion with Paul.

Can't wait for the Paul Stuart novel.
I wasn't sure I liked this book at first, but it got better and better. Loved the ending. Good length, too.

The Second-Worst Restaurant in France
I purchased this book a few years ago, not know Alexander McCall Smith and anything else he had written. I was soon captivated by the story and the characters and the thought, who writes something about not the best, or worst, but the “second-worst restaurant”. It’s almost become almost an annual summer read for me, I enjoy it so much. I moved on to “My Italian Bulldozer”, the second Paul Stuart book, and am hoping another will come along. In the meantime, I’ve discovered the Detective Varg series much to my delight.

Great book great story line
Great book with a great story line. The book is an easy and pleasant read. This book is about the main characters and their interaction while moving into different sometimes awkward situations. It is not about a detective story.

Dreamy. And so poignant
AMcS has spun out a gem. Again. A french one this time. And in a village.Learnt an amazing number of new words, gave flight to my imagination picturing the scenes in the story.Maybe there will be a sequel...some of the characters seem to have more to say but haven’t quite got a chance in this book. Let’s hope so.
