Amazing there is a problem with this film
Great film, just like Ninja scroll and Oedo 808 Cyber Punk City. But unlike those classics there is a fatal flaw with this movie. The ending is terrible. Everything up unit the end is great but when it comes to the final battle its an anti climax. Could of been one of the greatest but instead leaves you stunned.Still a classic. Wish they could go back and do it properly!

Classic Manga
I remeber watching this 10 years ago. This is a great quality dvd even though it's imported. It's only missing the 1 star because it's a little dated now and I didn't enjoy it as much as when I was a kid.

An overlooked high watermark of Japanese illustration
First things first: Eastern Star's DVD will play in UK DVD players. The DVD itself: It looks fantastic basically, as good as can possibly hoped for. Maybe adjust your colour and contrast settings for taste, but the detail's all there. The Film:This is one of those '80s gems from Yoshiaki Kawajiri (he of Ninja Scroll, Wicked City &, more recently, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust fame). For some reason it's overlooked compared to to his more famous releases, but it's really a work of art deserving of more respect. The style on display here is unparalleled; while it's lacking the detail of contemporaries like Akira (made on a considerably higher budget), it really is a sight to behold. The use of colour in particular: reds, blues, purples, glowing pinks and even greens when needed are used expertly; they add so much to the atmosphere it's hard not to marvel at the use of colour and just appreciate this on a purely visual basis. It gives all you could ask for in a supernatural-themed picture. As for the story, it's one of those late '80s demon horror quests that were quite in vogue at the time, and which I still love. There are none of the demon sex scenes or unwelcome comic relief moments found in Kawajiri's similar-in-many-ways Wicked City (also an adaptation of one of Hideyuki Kikuchi's stories), but the plot is so much better in my opinion. There's well-paced action, not quite on the level of Ninja Scroll but certainly fitting to the supernatural theme (bear in mind this is 5 years older). The only real complaint is the suddenness of the ending, but it's not *that* sudden (like, battle won, roll credits). You also won't find an overpowered hero here; on the contrary. But the main reason I love this is the style, artwork and corresponding atmosphere throughout - check out those park scenes with the gnarled trees and beautifully painted scenery. It's unbelievably lush. So, go into this expecting a visual trip and you'll not be disappointed.

A flawed jem
I have been a fan of anime for a very long time and its not very often I get pleasantly surprised by a new purchase. Not to be confused with wicked city (also released as demon city in the uk by manga entertainment, also sharing a director), demon city sj is very much a product of its time, it has the titular reluctant hero facing a battle with destiny he doesnt care about, a feminine, squeaky clean love interest, journey of discovery and a fight against a seemingly unbeatable evil. These things said it doesnt suffer for it and is still very enjoyable, it even has moments of heartfelt contemplation which really raise the plot above aberate. The animation itself is very good, hugely detailed at times with only a couple of instances of blatant money saving still frame techniques. The fight scenes are some of the best ever made although they are a little bit dated in regards to the flashing epilepsy inducing backgrounds, but they still hold their own against anything made today. As the other reviewer has stated the only major let down with this film is the ending, the whole film is building to a confrontation that is barely given any screen time and concludes in about 6 minutes. All in all a great film made average by some small inconsistencies
