How good is it for gaming?

It's very good but the 10th Gen and Ryzen 5000 processors are a little bit better. If you already have a socket 1151 board with a 300 series chipset then you might as well save money and get the 9900k.

So this 9900k with new packaging is still a 9900k correct? the 9900kf is in the same box but their labels don't differentiate from what i've seen.

Yes, a 9900K is a 9900K. The cool packaging is gone because the 9900K is no longer the most awesomeness chip and has been replaced with an even more awesome chip. The packaging was kind of cool to look at, but in reality is was very much a gimmick and pain to open.
