FIVE-STAR FROM THE BEGINNING TO THE END
This book is one of the reasons why I love to read, as well as hate to read. From the beginning I was totally captivated. It was one of those too few books that I hated to put down, waking up to find my Kindle still in my hands, although it had long since gone to sleep. This is the reason that I hate to read, also, because every book afterwards is such a let down...It is very obvious that this author isn't from the Seattle area. Air Force One does not land at Sea-Tac. It lands just north at the Boeing field. Another slight discrepancy is the responce time of fighter jets out of Portland. I had the great misfortune of driving north out of Olympia when Air Force One was nearing Seattle. Some hobby pilot was not aware of the closed air space. I believe the responce time from the alert until the arrival if the jets out of Portland and actually to Seattle was less than five minutes total, according to the news. Actual flight time was less than three minutes. Drivers on I-5 were pulling over to check for blown out tires or other car problems... the sonic booms were that intense. If this is my worst criticism of this book, which it is... This hit my favorite author's list after the first few pages!

Well versed political thriller
A well versed political thriller packed with a conspiratorial plot of intrigue, mystery and suspense. Most enjoyable was the absence of improbably acts of physical and combat feats often amplified in other thrillers I’ve read; creating a reasonable perception that the scenario in this portrayal could actually take place. The protagonist, Secret Service Agent Matthew Richter, is a personable character gifted with qualities of competence, emotional intelligence, empathy and humility. The introduction of the 40+ other individuals were well placed throughout the story and character development was limited to the most relevant players.I was wholeheartedly engaged in this novel after reading the prologue and the ebb and flow of Beyer’s writing style made the narrative a polished read. Looking forward to reading the sequel, An Eye for an Eye, and following Richter’s future perilous adventures. Side note: A sincere thank you to the author for including the meaning of each acronym introduced throughout this thriller.

Great Thriller!
I love reading an action-packed political thriller and I found it in “In Sheep’s Clothing”. L.D. Beyer has written a page-turning, fast-paced novel that will have you speculating and wondering throughout. The story opens with the President of the United States committing suicide while skeet-shooting with a number of Secret Service agents. It seems that someone has blackmailed him not to seek re-election. He obviously saw no way out of his dilemma. Matthew Richter is one of the President’s agents and feels in some way responsible that he could not stop what happened. His Vice-President, David Kendall has taken the reins of the country. Matthew Richter has been assigned to this president as well. He takes his job very seriously and is highly motivated to keep this new leader safe.President Kendall has chosen a man for his Vice-President who seems to be on a different wave-length than Kendall. Tyler Rumson has been in politics for years and has used his influence to garner people whom he can maneuver to do his bidding. He wants to be President…badly. He is determined that David Kendall will not run for re-election. When he finds out the opposite, Rumson calls in his markers. He has to do something to stop the President. In a spectacular event, Air Force One crashes on a flight from Seattle to Washington, D.C. What caused the crash? Did anyone survive the crash? Was it terrorism or sabotage? Was Matthew Richter able to do his job in keeping the president safe? Do not start reading this book unless you can finish it in one or two sittings. You will NOT be able to put it down.I loved the way Mr. Beyer develops his characters and keeps the reader in suspense trying to decide who the bad guys are. The Matthew Richter Thriller Series will now be on my reader list.I purchased a Kindle print copy of this book from Amazon.com. No review positive or otherwise was required – all opinions are my own.

Well done, masterfully written!
A totally believable tale with enough imaginative twists to keep the story alive. The survival details were realistic and chilling and the sense of adventure and romance and intrigue wafted through the entire story line with perfect balance. The characters felt real and came alive in their own contexts in such a manner that the story simply flowed around each one quite seamlessly.Particular kudos to the author for continuing past chapter 54. Many lesser authors would have wrapped the story up at this point by creating a few quick end-points to each open link in the story, but LD expanded the ending into a most satisfactory conclusion.I only found two mildly negative sections! The first was in chapter eight, when - quite suddenly - the Vice President's character explodes into that of a belligerent antagonist. I was left with an impression that this section was added just prior to publication at the publisher's insistence that LD establish some background to the VP's evil behaviour!Although the ending of the book was very well contrived overall, I was left with a sense of "incompleteness" , almost as if - again - the publisher had intervened and told LD to "finish by tomorrow..or else" !!These negative matters hardly detract from an excellent read. Well done, masterfully written indeed!

Reads more like a film
Short, snappy chapters, carrying the story along. Glad that I read it. When I started it I felt it would be predictable and labyrinthine and found the format off, finishing one page, only to find the next page being partially repeated. I left it and moved onto other books. Then weeks later I returned to it but fast forwarded to the end, just to check that the ending was satisfactory and not another 'life gets even worse and a vast conspiracy is still control g everything ...'I was intrigued, turned to the previous chapter and over a couple of days made my way back to the starting chapters. I have never done this with a book before, but could see every move in a clearer fashion. A bit like a proper murder investigation, back tracking from the end of the investigation back to the terrible deed.I liked the story and the leading character has more of a future, I am sure. The scary female fixer might return as an adversary

maybe 3.5 stars
I pretty much enjoyed most of this book - but, from the 40% mark, started speed reading it. And, by that, I mean looking for pages that I could bypass. The reason being TMI. When you are trying to build tension you can't keep stopping to waffle on about how planes are equipped, details of weapons etc. It just kills it dead. And when we get to the point where a journalist is contacted - I skipped about 6 pages of back story about him. He wasn't a major player in the story and knowing his back story did nothing to move the plot along - it was just filler, that defused more of the tension.Otherwise, it's not a bad book and I liked the hiker character's involvement.

In the image of Lee Child, David Baldacci, Vince Flynn
The first Matthew Richter book, and it was good. More of a political thriller but action-packed, too. And the characters were believable, as was the story. Great plot. Definitely keep an eye open for more by this author. If you like Vince Flynn, Lee Child, David Baldacci, you’ll like Beyer.

A rollicking good read.
Slow to start, but gets going at an unstoppable pace. The characters are well drawn, the story different to most other books, and overall I was really impressed. It may be a coincidence that the secret service agent is called Richter, but he bears a strong character resemblance to Jack Reacher in the Lee Child novels. If you like Lee Child books, you will love this, and L D Beyer is an author I will add to my list of favourites.
