Modern Russian: An Advanced Grammar Course (Russian Studies)

Russian textbooks tend to cover a wide range of differing materials as learners get into the higher levels, so some redundancy is invariable and some topics are also invariably left uncovered. Modern Russian does a good job of running through grammatical fundamentals and peculiarities while also keeping cultural references, vocabulary, and more detailed linguistic phenomena in mind.

This book is a decent book, but is best used in conjunction with a class or a tutor. There are no answer keys included in the book. The book expects a very large and technical vocabulary, but some of the words are outdated and the English translations are very British. Some of the grammar explanations are very clear and helpful, but even for an advanced class it was a little difficult to use because of the vocabulary issues.

Excellent, easy to use grammar reference. Is also great for review of grammar already learned (or not learned) in previous Russian courses. Easy to use for clarification of difficult, often confusing, points encountered by English speaker trying to improve correct one's usage of Russian language.

I am trying to learn Russian and this is a big help. It lets me learn at my own pace.

I bought this book for my advanced study of Russian, but I bought it before I had even started learning, and it scared me. I served a mission for the LDS church and they suggested this book. It is probably the most comprehensive way to learn grammar. Very Good Book!

How do you know if your answers are correct or incorrect without an answer key?

It is very difficult to find an easy and comprehensive grammar book. I bought several books before getting this one and by far, this is the best. It is the grammar I was looking for: detailed and simple to read.

Good, readable Russian grammar. Lots of example sentences from press, some of them a bit too demanding for my level of Russian language knowledge, but ничего!

This book is a must-have for any serious student of Russian. A word of warning though - this is meant for intermediate to advanced learners of Russian, and is not suitable for absolute beginners. For those students, I'd advise them to take a look at the New Penguin Russian Course (NPRC). My suggestion would be to start off with the NPRC and then use this excellent book to hone grammar.Also, considering the fact that most language learning books are imported, this is quite reasonably priced for a serious student.

If you are thinking of getting a Russian grammar book, my recommendation is Terence Wade's 'A comprehensive Russian grammar', as Wade's book is better formatted and gives a better balance between the rule and the inevitable exceptions (and has an accompanying exercise book with answers). In this book you can easily not see the wood for the trees and there are no answers to exercises to check your understanding.

Il libro mi piace molto ,ci sono tanti esempi .È proprio utile. Naturalmente occorre avere una buona preparazione in inglese.
