Interesting way to write a book on HTML/CSS & a new way to write a scientific book that seems to work.
Book arrived on time, in pristine condition, & as specified. As far as science books goes it is extremely an unusually written book & at 1st glance more resembles "Cindi Lauper's take on HTML"!!!!! The book has many goofy pictures & odd seeming "writings (you have to see it to believe it!)", but I think it does work overall. It seems to give many clear, concise, & readable explanations on the items I have skimmed in the book. Take my review more with skepticism as it is not an in depth review as I never got a chance to read it through & am only writing this review as it is so long ago I ordered it that I thought I should write something to make review relevant. If you want an "alternative method of writing a scientific textbook" then this is definitely one you should consider as it is written about as "groovy" as the book cover images. Well, now I am going underground as my good review of this book is breaking the Bushido code of scientific writings which is make the darn thing (I.E. book) as difficult to follow as possible & thus am running for my life as I will be hunted down by nutty professors & other scientific nerds for giving it a good review (only kidding of course)!

Their teaching style really works! I'm usually self-taught, but they do a better job teaching me than I do myself!
I feel kind of overwhelmed by all the other good reviews and rarely write one myself, but I wanted to just thank the authors for helping me pull together a LOT of bits and pieces I had learned about over a number of years. I'm not into professionally designing websites or programming these days (the last time I really wrote programming was for an Apple II+!), but I want to do some things for my own website I haven't been able to get others to understand. I don't know if I can't explain what I want well enough or if they don't get it, but I finally decided to dive into the HTML programming for myself. Several years ago I started the wrong way around by getting a book on CSS before I understood HTML and picked up some useful information and by asking questions and looking at HTML from actual websites I was able to teach myself some of the language and put it together, but I was never confident about it and I didn't know how to determine if I had the correct syntax or other parameters. I'm only about half way through the book, but already I've seen a lot of what I did know pulled together and explained in a way that I really remember and can go back and use without constantly referring to the book. In fact I've started reworking a website I tried to set up several years ago and I've made more progress in about a week than I made in 6 months before! The takeaway for me is that it REALLY is important to do the exercises and finish each of the puzzles whether they seem simple or not. I don't know why it works, but for me it has put all the pieces I already knew into a greater whole that I can remember and use. I don't know what I'll tackle next, but I'm pretty sure I'll start with a Head First book!

Fun compared to other options
Part of this book is out of date, but nothing critical. I have learned so much, and I'm halfway through. I'm looking forward to the other books in the series to continue learning. A true beginner can use this. I usually struggle to focus with textbooks, but this really is designed for the way adults learn. I just wish I hadn't wasted time with other books before finding this one. Things I had to figure out due to the age of the book: Windows 10 does have Notepad, but you have to search for it, it wasn't in my Start menu but it is included. You will need files to do the activities in the book. The authors created a website with the files. Their website doesn't have all of the files anymore, but there is a link to a GitHub site (it's okay if you have no idea what that is). The GitHub site has so far had all the files I've needed, all organized exactly the way the book says it will be organized. The w3schools link for the html tags has changed to html_entities.asp. If you don't have any Adobe products, paint.net is free and very easy to resize images. I'm sure there will be more minor issues as technology changes, but I have been able to figure out everything I needed with a simple internet search. Don't be intimidated, the information is still relevant and incredibly helpful if you're just getting started.

Great Resource, Sometimes Distracting
I haven't gotten too far into the book yet, nor am I by any means an expert on books about HTML, (this naturally being my first one) but my initial feelings about the book have been positive. This was the suggested reading for a Web Design class I'm taking in college. I will get to my thoughts on the book but first I must briefly mention the kindle version. I bought the kindle version of this book (actually the html, CSS, and XHTML, book specifically) and was not able to download it onto my phone (SG3). I just want you to be warned that if your phone is your pocket desk you will have to be buying the physical copy of this book. Anyways, so far I've born impressed with the book. It explains things in a simple way that you can easily understand. Sometimes I get irritated with the thought bubbles and the general layout but it is livable so far. What you really need to know is that this book will help you understand how HTML and CSS work, their differences and using them together. This book will not be a good reference guide if you are really familiar with web design already. There isn't a place where they layout a list of code for HTML and CSS, which although it would be nice, it's not what this book does. You will certainly gain knowledge of the languages, but throughout the book and with hands-on experience using the specific codes. Don't think of this as a physicians desk reference, think of it as a course on CPR.

Makes HTML Fun
It is as if a technical manual and Christopher Moore had a baby. It is fun to read and quick to learn. I was making rudimentary web pages in just a couple of days. I had absolutely no previous experience with HTML at all before picking this book up. My experience with webpages and blogging were limited to the free subscription to Wordpress. Now I am about 1/4 of the way into the book and already have a website that I built myself running through a hosting company and up on the web for the world to see. Each day, I learn a little something new and am able to apply it immediately. It is exciting and fun! Even though they say you can go through the entire book without getting a hosting company, I strongly suggest you make the effort necessary to get hooked up to the internet. The lessons come fast and are easy to comprehend and put to action BUT I find it vital to practice each lesson on my own to memorize them thoroughly. That is done by playing with my own website, building different parts of it according to what I am learning in the book. This is where most of my time is spent. Getting MY OWN work loaded up onto my own hosting server then being able to get online and see MY site, written completely from scratch by me is unbelievably satisfying. I am sure that I will be buying other books to get a deeper knowledge of HTML and CSS but this book has completely removed any doubts of my ability to do this. I CAN WRITE HTML and CSS! Very cool!

The best book for beginner and refresh memory for advance developer
if you are looking to become a best developer in your life? I highly recommend you The Head first for two reasons. the first reason why I recommend for beginner is the way that the book is designed. the book helps you understand concepts without memorizing them. this book explain why things are done in certain way. for example , if you have a chance to reach at the end of this book, you will enjoy the chapter 14 about form. specifically the last exercice where it sets up the beanmachine for starbuzz, the reason why you are going to enjoy is because everything you have been learning comes together is that chapter. you are going to see html and css combines are so powerful. the second reason I highly recommend that book is because that gives a solid foundation for someone who never programmed before. I was 28 years old when I got started with book, and honestly, that boost my career as developer. now, you might ask yourself" reading the whole book you make you a programmer? Unfortunately, not. In order the get the most knowledge from this book, you have to build project as you learn. again, dont read the whole and start doing project at the end. start as soon as possible you have basic like Htags, images and href. again, go ahead and book this book if you are seeking to become a web developer

Easily the best HTML/CSS book for the beginners
After finishing two brilliant headfirst books, HF java, HF JSP and Servlets couple of years back, I knew, if I ever have to learn a new technology in detail, the first place would be headfirst. Kathy Sierra and Bert Bates are my legends, thanks to the awesome books they have written on java. However recently I was asked by a friend to code a small website for his company. His requirements weren't too fancy and I had some basic knowledge of html and css from various online tutorials. However his requirements got delayed and I got this idea of learning html/css basics from the ground level. I turned to amazon and found Head First HTML and CSS with 70% users giving it a full five stars. I ordered the book online and the minute I opened it, I was pleasantly surprised by the glossy paper finishing and color images. Somewhere in my mind I always had this grudge that headfirst guys even though trying to convey concepts through pictures and visuals but shy away from proportionately rich look by selecting black-and-white colors, may be they want to keep the costs down. Anyway, I loved this graphic novel/comic (don't judge :-)) style of printing. It has been six days since and I have completed almost 350 pages (half the book). The minute detail given behind every html element and css rule is commendable. I feel much more comfortable around them now. Like everyone else has mentioned, "there are no dumb questions" is undoubtedly the best feature of this book. Most of the questions felt like snatched straight from your mouth. Even though I am halfway through this book, I will give 10/10 to this wonderful book. Thank you Eric Freeman and Elisabeth Robson, you deserve a salute.

Super Beginner Friendly Book
I started learning HTML/CSS first week of March 2020. I stumbled upon this book because it was supposed to be beginner friendly and boy they were right. Super interactive, the concepts are broken into smaller pieces and lots of code practice and repetition. The exercises throughout the book are very helpful in testing and application of what you've learned. Lot of goofy pictures and silly characters which fights the boredom of learning from a textbook... a really heavy textbook Its 700+ pages... but, so far I'm really enjoying it. Although this is an old book (2012) I've red that most concepts are still the same and after this I am ready to tackle other HTML CSS learning materials... then I'll get there javascript book too. Thanks Headfirst!

Awesome learning material
The format of any of the Head First series of books is outstanding. I love it but others may find it too humorous for learning material. We all learn differently and from time to time we need to learn in a different manner and these series of books do just that. Its playful BUT absolutely structured and informative with the right amount of exercises, quizzes and examples to practice with. One size doesn't fit all but this series fits me and I find myself looking at what else they teach that I would buy their book just to learn it in their fashion. Try it out - what has you got to loose !!

I've been searching for a good HTML and CSS since long time
I've been searching for a good HTML and CSS since long time. There are plenty available in the market and also on the internet and i went through most of them but though the subject looks simple and obvious, while implementing i used to feel like i'm not comfortable with the subject. When i almost decided that this particular subject is not my cup of tea, i found this great book. It taught me how to learn HTML & CSS. It excited me so much that i could not stop reading it till i complete it within few days (of course including the exercises given in the book). Get a copy of yours today and start reading it. You will know, what i told about the book here is very very less.
