From Utopia to Distopia
The five stars I have awarded for this purchase is in recognition of delivery, condition and content of the book. So far I have only read part of it but can confirm that it contains key issues relevant to what we euphemistically describe as a Democracy. The best way to change anything from being generally acceptable and good to appallingly and unacceptably bad is by measured almost imperceptible increments to start with, gradually increasing the momentum and boldness as each hurdle is reached and surmounted without consequence. Just as a goldfish is only aware of its limited and confined home so are we seemingly limited to the output of our own TV/radio stations, and newspapers reinforcing and acculturating us all into a coherent and compliant body of beliefs. Once you have become one of the masses, from a very early age, your opinions have been effectively hard wired into your psyche and are very difficult to dislodge even when contradictory and incontrovertible evidence is presented to you. You then become a majority body of people continually maintaining this new propaganda through peer pressure to those few who would be described as radicals. Remember that nothing in politics happens by chance, and trust can only be maintained by constant vigilance. The new social morality has become GREED IS GOOD and works like Darwin's theories of survival going to those who have made themselves the fittest through their own power base. Man's ambition has always been to become a GOD and that time is imminent.Demoralize the enemy from within by surprise, terror, sabotage, assassination. This is the war of the future. By the skillful and sustained use of propaganda, one can make a people see even heaven as hell or an extremely wretched life as paradise. Adolph Hitler

He knows everyone and has been everywhere and writes about ...
He knows everyone and has been everywhere and writes about presidents and peasants equally well. It was interesting. BUT this highly connected and competent journalist is either half blind and totally naïve, or he is purposely playing the role of the tell-it-how-it-is investigator but hiding the evidence. Has he never heard of power play by false flag? Does he really not know what the US and the British are up to? Has he not even begun to suss the lies we are told? I doubt it. Maybe no one would have published it if he'd told the truth. Well, there's always self-publishing these days. It's no excuse. If you want a story from the inside, read Sibel Edmonds, Lone Gladiator, written as novel to get around the gagging orders on her.

If you need to take a peek behind the curtains ...
If you need to take a peek behind the curtains of what is really happening in your name, and why it continues to be so, this is the book that provides just that. One of those books where, once you begin, you may not want to stop until you reach the end. RayJay.

Half the story
In the conclusion the author writes: "The preeminent freedom has become financial - to earn, to keep one's money and consume." The missing half is that hundreds of millions escaped from abject poverty, with no clean drinking water, sewage disposal, healthcare, education, hunger and decent jobs. Freedom did not exist for these millions. It is nevertheless interesting and worthwhile to know about journalists whose freedom was restricted in unjust ways, to the point of being killed.. It is a problem that some journalists do not act in accordance with the Code of ethics from the Society of Professional Ethics that states, "Professional Integrity is the cornerstone of a journalist's credibility". This includes "Giving the subjects the opportunity to respond to allegations of wrong doing" and "Admit mistakes and correct them promptly". Some journalists do not follow these principles. Some publish stories without a sound basis where the purpose appears to be to cause sensations and increase newspaper sales, and having made an mistake, refuse to admit it and where in addition the newspaper refuses to publish a response from the person accused of wrong actions. Newspapers are still the moat important and trusted form of information to the people at large. This book is right about that governments should change policies that prevent journalists from finding out and publishing the truth as long as they follow their ethical standards that include, quotes from the Code, "Shun political involvement and "Imposing their own cultural values on others."

Fascinating and frightening
I am a great fan of BLAIR'S WARS and so I had high expectations for this book, and I am happy to say I was not disappointed. This is a comprehensive and often very alarming survey of the state of democracy in the world today. The whole book has been immaculately researched and Kampfner makes his case clearly and persuasively. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in global politics at what is such an extraordinary time in world history.

Terrifying and illuminating
An intriguing book that examines how democracy and capitalism have been undermined by unscrupulous governments across the world - most notably our own. Kampfner raises tough questions that, luckily, he's deft enough to answer, and the resounding silence after the book is finished is enough to raise even scarier prospects: such as, if we're willing to disregard civil liberties in pursuit of wealth, how long many can be taken before we no longer have the right to choose?A fascinating, insightful and intelligent argument. Well worth a purchase.
