Great book!
Fantastic book. I had no idea until recently the difference between tanks and assault guns. So you're thinking, "whats the big deal?" Well, let me tell you sir, it was a big deal. Read and find out. Also, it is a large and quality made hard back book.

A must have
units histories. The read will like the training and deployments of these units that fought in all theaters. After reading I came to the conclusion that the majority of these unit served on the russian front and were in the thick of the fightinging all the time. To bad alot of them were destroyed there, many did true to make it to the western allied side. A clear book worth having

A must for any enthusiast of WW II armored warfare
An incredibly detailed, personal account of the assault gun units in the German Wehrmacht. The accounts of battles, of the technology involved, and the comprehensive history of assault guns is unprecedented. I love this book

A useful Reference Guide
The author, in his introduction, explains what these machines are, how StuG formations were formed, how they differ from panzers and who created these formations. The creator of these formations was F.M. v. Manstein and a brief profile of his life is also given.A brief history of these assault guns begin in the late 1930s followed by a small participation in the war in France in 1940. In the original concept these machines would support infantry but with Barbarossa the machines had to evolve to become tank killers with heavier armor and bigger guns. Toward the end of the war, they were often used as fire brigades. After the introductions, the author lists in numerical order just about every Stug battery, battalion or brigade that was formed during the war. Besides the organizational info, insignias and key officers, an operational summary is provided that also includes first hand accounts of some of the personal experiences of the formations. You will also read about the other formations like infantry that these machines supported. The operational summaries are good and interesting but not comprehensive. Like his other books, Mr Kurowski blends the operational with the anecdotal to give the reader a rounded experience of the war from the German perspective. These StuG formations are listed numerically so if you know the specific unit it will be quick to find but if you wanted to find out which units were involved in Kharkov 1942 or Stalingrad or Rzhev or Kursk there is no easy way to find it.There are many fine photos of these assault guns and the men who used them. There is a separate gallery of Knight;s Cross recipients. There are also color illustrations of the different variants as well as some of the other fighting vehicles of the war to help peak your interest. There is also an appendix but no maps, Notes, Bibliography or Index. The author must have spent a lot of time compiling this book and it could be used as a good standalone book or as a reference guide when reading about these formations in other books. Its recommended to all interested in tanks and mobile warfare.
