Description

A vigorous, unusual deciduous shrub that originates from China. It is known to be a fantastic ornamental due to it producing stunning flowers in the spring time and large, edible fruits later on in the year. The shrub has spiny thorns and shoots making it an affective barrier when planted. Masses of pinkish-white flowers are in bloom during the spring, forming small clusters that stand out greatly against its simple, tinted purple leaves. Once the leaves have turned green later on in the year, edible fruits appear. The rounded fruits are the size of a large apple, hard when raw but delicious when cooked making them perfect for jams and jellies. For optimal growth, the plant is to be placed in full sun or partial shade and planted in well-drained but moist soil. It can withstand temperatures as low as -20c.
