I have had periods of insomnia for years. (Who hasn't had occasionally) Lately, my stress and anxiety levels had shot way up. Insomnia was worsening. My average nights' sleep was fewer than 3 hours per night. I tried all the usual ways: meditation. Melatonin to sleep. Nothing worked. If got so bad I was unable to drive or even manage the minimum activities of daily living. I lived in my pajamas. Then I told my son. He recommended I try 5-HTP for the anxiety, stress. He said it could even help insomnia. By the time I tried this, I was suffering stress angina every day. I hadn't had an angina attack in several years. I started by taking one tablet per day. Barely helped. I took one and one-half tablet per day. Helped, but not enough. I did research and found studies said for anxiety, can take up to 400 mg. I then started taking 2 tablets per day. Success. I just awoke, having slept for over 6 hours. I have been driving again. My anxiety is greatly lessened. My angina, also. PLEASE NOTE: I do not in any way, shape or form recommend taking 5HTP for angina. Mine is stress angina. I still plan to see my physician about it. I have been charting symptoms. With ObamaCare still in effect, for now, I cannot afford doctors as I once did. In summary, I like this Natrol 5-HTP Time Release tablet. Top layer dissolves right away. Then, it keeps a steady level in your system throughout the day. It has greatly helped my insomnia, my anxiety, my stress. Even helped the depression I wasn't aware I had, in light of the other symptoms I am on the mend.

Have been taking this for over one month , I'm noticing a definite improvement in my mood , it seems the negative thoughts don't take root in my head any more like they used to - before taking the 5 htp some ugly thought , or some silly comment made from someone would set up in my head and would not leave . I knew this was not how I wanted to be but could not stop feeling this way, I knew living like this was affecting my life and the ones I loved . I have been on antidepressants before and have stopped because of some side effect that would manifest sooner or later . I hated the idea of being on them - never had any real relief anyways . I also would look up self help articles on the web , books , anything I thought would help with this problem I've been living with for most of my life . Then I came across information on the internet about 5 htp , decided to give it a shot - it's one of the best things I've ever done for myself , and I hope others suffering in the same way find the same relief I have had with this product . The best advice I can give is get on the internet and do your own research on symptoms of low serotonin levels . Read other people's experience using 5 htp , start with the lowest dosage and go from there . I figured out that for me it was best to take it late in the evening , right after supper or even a couple hours after supper was o.k. Mornings was not a good time because I felt it kind of made me feel edgy . The good results really started kicking in about three weeks taking this product , I am amazed at the peace of mind I have now , it's so good to go about my day and not have some horrible negative thought take over my mind completely. I also feel this has had other beneficial benefits to my general well being and health but I want wait a little longer to see if the improvement is consistent in those areas. I will try to post future updates on my experience using 5htp.

EDITED: 10/31/16 To everyone who this did NOT work for. It's important to know that this is best taken with L-Theanine and caffeine either coffee or green tea is best. The Caffiene is like the super highway for the 5htp to get to work on ur neurons for mood/anxiety.Granted EVERYONES chemical makeup is different but I'm on week 9 and can't be happier!) OK, as to not make this an extremely long review. Who am I kidding, it's gonna be a long one. However, I will try to spare you the gory details (well maybe) lol and tell you that, This 5-HTP by Natrol has literally saved my life or the life of my brain/nervous system! No exaggeration! I've always had mild depression with bouts of more moderate like most Americans I believe. However, over the coarse of 10 yrs my Anxiety had been getting progressively worse. My anxiety got to the point to where I could not function like a normal human being. It's like this weight that would not go away. A tick sucking the life out of me. To where I started not being able to leave my home. Remember when I said I would spare you the gory details?? Well, click away if u must NOW! WARNING!!! TMI!!! Ok, so that debilitating anxiety I started to experience about 2 yrs ago, began with the feeling of being completely overwhelmed then that turned into brain fog, absent minded, not being able to focus on a single task. Then it progressed into total nervous system malfunction. Anxiety would come on so strong at the slight mention of me having to attend lunch with friends,meetings, going to the grocery store, and or driving more than 10 miles in any direction from my home. I can tell u and here's the TMI part that I knew where every bathroom in a 10 mile radius from my home was because my anxiety would hit at any given time like a bomb (no pun intended) and immediately my limbs would start to go numb, my head would get foggy, I would get either hot or cold and get diarrhea. I couldn't leave the house without using the bathroom several times. I began taking Imodium on a regular basis. It was HORRIBLE and totally out of control. I'm a single mom to two children one of which is special needs and I literally had to plan everything around my anxiety. Like a friend would say lets go out and just the mere thought would get me buggy but then the day of I ofcourse would get sick-8times out of 10 having to cancel. If I HAD to go out, I could only by taking 2 Imodium pills and a shot of liquid. I would still b so nervous, jetting through the grocery store throwing things in my cart like I was in a race. Driving home well, stopping atleast once to use restroom. But as soon as I would enter my community my anxiety would drop and I would cross the threshold of my front door and the toad would jump out of my throat and I could breath again. I felt I'm home so im safe. I actually started to get groceries delivered. It WAS BAD!!! Needless to say I wasn't living, I was just existing. Anxiety had totally taken over my life. So, in fear of becoming a total recluse and sick of being sick I realized this visitor named "anxiety" had to go. They stayed long enough and I made it my mission to kick its u know what out!!! My sister knew a friend going through a hard time and recommended 5-HTP. She claimed it saved her from her bad anxiety. I was a pure skeptic. I thought life without all these debilitating symptoms??? Minimal to NO anxiety being able to focus,function and not be in my bathroom more then 10 times a day. WAIT! WHAT? U mean I can beat this naturally?? NO WAY!!! Works well, but I do not like taking the tablet form. Do Not take this with antidepressants, Tylenol or other prescription migraine medicines. As someone who has struggled with major mood swing, PMS and OCD most of my adult life I gave in several years ago and started taking Effexor because I was getting on my own nerves. Although it did help me 100% the side effects were horrible if I missed a dose. I decided I didn't want to feel dependent on a medicine like that anymore and it took me 6 months to wean off of it. Brain zaps. nausea, shaking, you name it and I experienced it from the withdrawals. I recently started feeling like I needed something again and decided to purchase 5-HTP based off of research and product reviews. I initially took half a dose about 30 mins before bed because I wasn't really sure what the side effects would be since it was new to my system. I can say that it really does help to settle my crazy restless mind at just 100mg and for the first time in months I was able to sleep so so. Not awesome but better than usual. After three days I started taking the 200mg dosage at bedtime. I honestly feel normal I guess you can say. My sleep isn't soundly and all night but I am sleeping better. I know how the Effexor made me feel and this is similar. I am not near as moody or obsessive about the order of things. I honestly just think I am one of these people who have some wacky chemically imbalanced brain and I need to forever take something to just feel human. If I forget to take one I don't feel ill like I did with Effexor so I feel confident that I could just cold turkey stop them if I ever wanted to and not have horrible withdrawals. Everyone is different but for me I will continue to take these because they really seem to help stabilize me.

I’ve been taking 5-HTP consistentlyone capsule a day for five years. And when I say consistently, I mean every single day. I originally started taking it to help with sleep, which I’ve struggled with long term. Over time, I noticed my mood felt more balanced, but the biggest change was something I didn’t expect at all. I completely lost my desire for alcohol. Not reduced gone. No cravings, no interest, and even a level of repulsion. I don’t enjoy the smell, the taste, or even the idea of it anymore. That shift wasn’t intentional, so I didn’t connect it right away. But when I looked back, the timing lines up closely with when I started taking this. Now, I can’t say this is the cause. Life changes, mindset, and personal decisions all play a role. But I also haven’t seen many reviews from people who have taken this daily for years, so I felt like sharing my experience. What I will say is this: consistency matters. Most people won’t take anything long enough to really see what it does over time. I have, and this has become a permanent part of my routine like a daily maintenance supplement I don’t plan on stopping. I don’t know how it will affect anyone else. My fiancé and I recently moved in together and unfortunately that means sharing the bed with someone who rolls around and gets up for bathroom breaks multiple times a night. Also I'm dealing with her annoying cat meowing at the door or coming in to garner attention in our sleep a few times a night. I'd been waking up almost every hour on bad nights and no less that 4-5 times on good nights. I also suffer from general anxiety, high strung/sweating in public, so I figure I'd give this a try. Enter Natrol 5-HTP, all I can say is wow this stuff is great! I take it about a half hour before bed and I'm out like a light. First off you are going to have some really vivid dreams like you're Arnold starring in Last Action Hero or Total Recall. I haven't had any bad dreams on this stuff just dreams where waking up you're wondering if that was real life, you just can't remember when it happened. Secondly, the sleep quality is also great. Even if I wake up a few times a night my sleep in between is super deep. I don't feel like I am rolling around in my sleep, I'm like a rock when I take this. The only bad thing which isn't unusual for me is waking up I feel a little groggy. I literally woke up the other day and didn't know what day it was right away and if I had to go into work, I had to think what I did the past day to figure it out. Regarding the anxiety I think it may be helping a little. It seems like it works better than other herbal anxiety supplements I've tried. I haven't been sweating like crazy lately and have been more relaxed in crowded public areas. Generally I just feel a more rested and relaxed. If you're on the fence about this definitely give it a try.

This is a fantastic supplement. I sleep better, my general mood is improved, and it seems to mildly help with my anxiety. I combine this supplement with SAM-e - Be careful as, while this is a combination that works very well for me, there are risks involved. For me, the benefits outweigh the risks. I previously took a relatively high dose of Zoloft for years and, thanks to my horrible doctor who prescribed it, was not aware that I couldn't just stop taking it when I wanted to. I went through a horrible, debilitating withdrawal period, but had no idea that was the cause. I experienced dizziness and "head zaps" to the point of vomiting, low-grade fever, etc. I stopped taking this supplement when I went on vacation for 4 days without thinking anything of it. On the fourth day, I started experiencing mild symptoms similar to SSRI withdrawal - head zaps and dizziness. I didn't realize 200mg was that high of a dose, but be careful - If taken every day, use with caution. I plan to switch to the 100mg. Also be especially careful combining with other serotonin-altering supplements/medication (SAM-e, St. John's Wart, GABA, SSRI's, etc.).
