Robert Motherwell: The Making of an American Giant

This is NOT an art book it’s a biography
Nicely packaged book but I was very disappointed and annoyed to discover less than 10 plates of Motherwell’s work. This is a standard biography and not a traditional art book. Needs a proper description. $30 for words about art I do not have reproductions of.

Three Stars
Not many color prints in the book. It is more abut Motherwell and not so much about his art.

... novel-like account of the life of one of the greatest abstract expressionist of the New York School
An almost novel-like account of the life of one of the greatest abstract expressionist of the New York School, Jacobson takes you by the hand and leeds you through the steps that Motherwell made (or better, that made Motherwell), admittedly as a non-biographer. As someone that was so close to meet and know the artist, the pages radiate with admiration. The result is an account that at points feels intimate as a friendly bond between the two and at others bounce to the wider view of precise moments in such variegated history. Moreover, each of the section recounts what is a coral shaped story, full of notes and information enriching a traditional biography and making the volume ever more interesting.

his achievement and his influence are all in this excellent book. For those looking to find the man
Motherwell's distinctive approach, his achievement and his influence are all in this excellent book. For those looking to find the man, read Jacobson's book. It isn't a coffee table book full of illustrations--it's a book to read, and then to see with more understanding into the depth of Motherwell's art.
