Very informative!
I am a metalsmith and I purchased this product when I became pregnant because I wanted to know what kind of safety measures I should be taking during such an important period in my life. This book is really informative. It told me about everything from tools to solvents to various techniques and the possible dangers that they can hold. It also gave me a list of things that are not a good idea to have in my studio because they are unsafe, and alternatives that I could use to those items that fall within a certain realm of safety. This book is great because it also reminds the reader of the basic things that all metalsmiths should be aware of for longterm saftey. I learned many of the basics in my classes but it's great to have it all written in one place and with offered alternatives to various chemicals and oxidizing agents that are not good to be exposed to.My only complaint about this book is that it's a little challenging to find a section. This is a very dense book, full of a lot of valuable info. The chapters are not very easily separated, they don't have a blank space or a larger font to help the reader find the correct spot in the book. You just have to be prepared to search a section to find the nuggets of info you may be looking for about the specific subject. I wanted to find out about the unsafe chemicals in solder....so I read all about solder in order to discover the answer. It just takes a little more time.I don't mind this, because every time I look something up, I learn more about something than I normally would have. I do need to make sure I have the time to read the whole section though!I also wish this book had a little more info about what is safe while pregnant. The author does a great job of emphasizing extreme caution while pregnant but didn't recommend possible products to use while with child. My old teacher recommended that I get cadmium-free solder and fluoride-free flux. I didn't find info about these in the book and hope that they get added. I think it is valuable information for every metal worker to know about.I highly recommend this book to anyone working in the field of metalsmithing. Safety is sexy baby!
