A CLASSIC!!!!!!
Classic cult sci-fi/horror movie from the early 90's starring Gunnar Hansen (the original Leatherface from Texas Chainsaw Massacre) as Earl, legendary guitarist Ron Asheton from Iggy and the Stooges as Hendricks, Tim Lovelace (Axe Giant) as Ray, Rachel Loiselle (Stone) as Megan and Steve Dixon as Parks. Mosquito was a mainstay fan favorite on the USA Network for many years before moving over to the SyFy Channel. This is the last of the great 50's style giant creature movies using practical effects. This movie is a nod to all the great films that came before it.If you're expecting Jurassic Park this isn't it but if you loved Them, Kingdom of the Spiders, The Giant Mantis and Night of the Lepus then this is right up your alley. The movie starts starts with a UFO crashing into a swamp and a mosquito feeds on the arm of an alien sticking out from the wreckage in a nod to War of the Worlds. Soon, giant five foot long mosquitoes are attacking people in campgrounds and across a remote forested area. A band of unlikely heroes are hunted down by the blood sucking behemoths but come together to battle the infestation. The acting isn't great but that's not the point (and actually adds to the charm of this movie). The FX are classic and practical with well done rubber giant mosquitoes (think Tremors), use of foreground miniatures and even a stop-motion animation shot (only one CGI shot in the whole film). The film was written by director Gary Jones and cinematographer Tom Chaney, both of whom worked on Evil Dead 2 and it shows. This is Gary's first full length feature film and he has gone on to make many films since as well as working on Xena Warrior Princess and Hercules. Produced by the late Andre Blay (The Blob, Village of the Damned and They Live). If you're already a fan of the movie but haven't picked up the blu-ray you'll be thrilled to find there's a full-length documentary on the making of the movie called "Bugging Out" with tons of "behind the scenes" and interviews with the cast and crew! This alone is worth the price of the blu-ray (which looks amazing).I gave MOSQUITO five stars because of my love for the genre and the effort by Gary Jones and company to recreate the magic of a bygone era. In a world over overblown digital effects this movie is a gem and will go down in history as the last of its kind. If you're a fan of the genre, MOSQUITO definitely deserves a place in your collection. Maybe you haven't discovered the beauty and nostalgia of the 50's giant bug genre yet but you're looking for something to dive into outside the mainstream of high-end Hollywood sci-fi monster movies... then check out Mosquito. As popular as this movie was within its fan base I can't believe there's not a sequel. Many of the main cast are gone now but I'm holding out hope this film can finally get the sequel it deserves!

Diptera Directed Disaster!!!
Mosquito (1995). Once in awhile, the perfect marriage of energy, creativity, and schlocky artistic sensibilities get together, and in Gary Brown's B-Movie extraordinaire, get together they do. Like Critters and Night of the Creeps, events are set in motion by a spaceship traveling near earth, which releases a ship onto the planet. The landing does not go well, and when a mosquito feeds on the dead arm of the War of the Worldsy-lookin alien, well, I don't think I need to tell you what breaks loose. It's Hell. All of it.What follows is a movie that covers all of its bases: delightfully inventive gore, sweet-ass car chase, excessive nudity, over-the-top characters, and, finally, a last stand in a boarded-up house. The effects are pretty excellent, a smorgasbord of practical perfection. The mosquito puppets are a delight and pretty effective: you will believe giant mosquitoes can fly. Also, BONUS: plenty of decent stop-motion, always a plus in my book! The gore is awesome, from proboscises in the eyeball...to proboscises in the butt, Mosquitoes makes sure to cover ALL the bases. Mosquitoes also features very satisfying gun sounds, like Snake Plisken's in Escape From New York, sort of metallic-sounding chunk blasts, kind of cool. One of my favorite scenes is hilariously filmed as our heroes race away from the mosquito horde in a camper, in the exterior shots, they are driving through a verdant and lush forest, then, in the cab, you can see all the leafless autumn trees passing outside. It's so obvious you can't not notice, but it's just yet another delightful and endearing foible in this delightful and endearing film. They did miss out on mosquito life-cycles, which begin in the water--and there were water scenes, just without deadly aquatic mosquito larvae--but they had to do their Aliens homaging, so I guess it's okay. Super fun. AND the late, great Gunner Hansen is in it!

Leatherface vs. Giant Mosquitoes
Another blast from the past for me! I remembered this playing a lot on the Sci-fi Channel back when I was a kid, and watching this again after all these years brings back good memories...of me being terrified at the sight of people being sucked dry by giant mosquitoes. Yup this movie scared the crap out of me back then, but I still love it. This campy creature feature still holds up very well today, with some really impressive practical effects for the mosquitoes and the gore. There's even some good stop-motion effects to boot. The acting isn't really top-notch, but it's not too bad to not enjoy and the characters are still good. Plus there was the small inconsistency involving the main characters never actually finding the crashed alien spaceship that caused the mosquitoes to mutate. I was surprised to find out that Gunnar Hansen, who played Leatherface in the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, was in this movie, and it was great seeing him fight the mosquitoes with a chainsaw! Overall this was a goofy early 90's creature feature that was fun to watch after all these years. If you're into giant bug movies, then this is definitely a must watch. And if you want to know about the behind-the-scenes stuff that went into making this movie, I suggest you take a look at the Exploring Mosquito video by Good Bad Flicks on YouTube, it's really fascinating and showed that this movie was a real labor of love! R. I. P. Gunnar Hansen.

"..CLASSIC 90'S CREATURE FEATURE.."
PLOT...After an alien spacecraft crashes down in a national park, mosquitos suck the blood of the craft's deceased extra-terrestrial pilot, causing the insects to mutate to an abnormally large size and soon after start to kill every human in sight. This is another fantastic early 90's horror sci-fi gem, if you love old cult classic cheesy movies then make sure you don't miss this! The story starts much like predator with a pod detaching from an alien craft and heads to earth, but the alien dies and mosquitos start feasting on its blood transforming them into monsters, the movie is well paced out with plenty action, some nudity and lots of bug attacks, plenty of great blood and gore all good old school practical effects, plenty model bugs and slime, its cheesy and low budget but they really made a go at it with what they had and it looks great, there are a few low rent CG effects too but the cheese is what makes it awesome watching it again now! The cast is all pretty good and the movies soundtrack is pretty decent too, if you love creature features from the 80's/90's its one to have in the collection, great fun and I highly recommend the great German Blu-ray versions as they are UNCUT and have good features.Blu-ray has a decent HD picture for an old movieFeatures include commentaries, a making of (75mins long) deleted scenes, original behind the scenes (40mins) trailer, most of the features are the same ones from the Synapse Blu-ray release in the U.S.I'm basing my review on the German import media-book version which is great, DVD is also included plus 14-page insert with pictures and German text. Region B, Running time 92mins, 1994/2019.All English spoken language movie, includes German audio.

Such an unusual film with outstanding special effect for the time (giant mosquitos that you wanted to slap). The price was a little high, but I wanted this unique work for my collection. Maybe they should do a remake. many thanks!
