Too much weak material
This is a lot of music for the price - really a great buy. Unfortunately, I found many of the albums loaded up with less than stellar material. The instrumental pieces, of which there are too many, are weak and pointless as far as I am concerned. The Byrds Greatest Hits Album gives you all the best songs and flavor of the Byrds. That's where I'd turn unless you really love this group.

The Definitive Collection
There are lots of "greatest hits" compilations around, and those do hold some fine songs, but having ALL the tracks, in their original order, is a step way beyond - essential for recapturing the marvel of these recordings. But this package is even more than that! Each disc also contains additional alternate versions and unreleased tracks that nearly double the length of the original recordings. If you can't get enough of each note on the original versions, these additions are a wonderful new journey to Byrdsland! Sound quality is fine. Each disc comes in a reproduction of the original album jacket, which is great, except that you'll need a magnifying glass to read the essays on back! It would have been super if this package also included a booklet discussing these recordings in greater depth, but what it is is still a gem.

60's pop geniuses
This was a little bit of a risk for me since I only knew a few of their songs, but as I listed to some samples I was intrigued. In any case, it was 5 CDs for under $20, so why not try it? After listening to it, I was so glad I did purchase it, but now I find myself loving the music so much that I wished I bought the albums separately. This is a very bare bones package with the five discs in reproductions of their record sleeves. There's no liner notes or even any kind of protective cover for the CDs, so in that way I feel a little let down, but the songs on all 5 discs are so wonderful that I end up not caring about the quality of the package while the vocal harmonies make my spine melt.I'm not going to go into a breakdown of all 5 albums, I'll just simply say that the Byrds should be listened to by everyone. Really. The Byrds just had a talent for doing covers that sounded so much better than the originals, especially Bob Dylan's. Dylan's vocals are just lame compared to the Byrds. Also, the original songs they wrote were always ahead of their peers, from folk-pop, to psychedelia, to country-rock, this band was everything, and they would influence almost everyone. Give them a shot. They're much more than Turn Turn Turn.

Best Value
This box set coupled with the other second half containing the remaining 5 albums really is the best value for your buck. Together they're still cheaper than the box set that contains every album. This way you can get every album for under $40. That's a deal if you're a Byrd fan.The only thing I didn't like about this set is that it didn't contain the first five albums in mono like they were originally recorded and released. Stereo didn't get too popular until '68. Anyway, it's a great set, sound quality is superb and you get all the extra recordings that weren't originally released on the albums, including singles.Buy them both, I highly recommend the Byrds to anybody. If you love folk music, rock, and great harmony, you'll love the Byrds.

Extra tracks
This is a great price for 5 CDs. The packaging, to emuate record covers, doesn't list them, but these include the bonus tracks from the 1996 reissue. I'm not sure that important, but it's nice to be complete.I have most of the Byrds albums on vinyl, but I've not listened to them in over twenty years. Early after getting a CD player in 1997, Igot a boxed set, pretty complete but missing things. I did get Sweetheart of the Rodeo and Ballad of Easy Rider. Now I have everything, including "CTA-102".Most people could live with a collection. But that focus means original albums are never heard, and so material falls out of sight.

Excellent.
Every album a classic, as is every track. The price of these discs is scandalously giveaway. A must-hear as much as a a must-have.
