Does this product decompose, or dissolve tree roots?

Yes..., that said this product chemically burns just the location the root that comes in contact with the liquid. In the same breath the product dissipates a short distance from the drain field pipe. But in so much as dissolving roots..., after the area is killed the wood will rot, but nothing will disolve wood/roots overnight. 
Bottom line, copper sulphate when used properly prevents root issues.

Is this just for septic tanks?

No, this is not just for septic tanks, I don't have a septic tank but have been using this for about 7 years. I had roots that kept growing through at the joints of the pipes, (no plumber will tell you that copper sulfate will destroy the roots and keep everything dead for a a nice little radius around those joints); the same joints that The Roots come in through, when you put this in (you do it at night) it sucks out through those same joints and gets in the soil and stays there and kills everything. I haven't had a flooded basement in about 6 1/2 years. I do it every 2/3 weeks, I wait till night when everybody is already in bed, I pour the entire thing into the toilet flush until it's gone and then make sure nobody does anything until the next day. Use common sense, if it rains a lot, it grows a lot, so you would use it more in the spring once a month in the summer and whatever your fall does, if it rains a lot use it more if it doesn't, once a month. My pipes are great, the roots are gone, and I don't have to worry about it.

Can this be used in the shower drain?

Not it is not advisable. To control roots in a municipal city sewer, apply 2 pounds of the Zep Root Kill in ½ increments at a time into the toilet nearest the sewer line. Repeat the application until the 2 pounds have been added. Another option is to remove the cleanout plug and pour the entire bottle directly into sewer line, then flush the closet toilet several times.
