From the Manufacturer Uberstix Sailboat--Science Project Series--Full-fledged fun sails ahead! What you build actually works! Using recycled water bottles, you can build an actual working sailboat. Water Bottles make it float, the wind makes it sail. Set sail to go up wind or down wind. Tack and jibe, it's easy and fun. As part of the Science Project Series, a 3 to 4 hour lab sheet lesson plan is included that teaches the basics of sailing and the function of the keel and rudder. You can also modify your boat to create your own design; single hull, catamarans, trihulls.

Does work, instructions difficult.
Instructions are tough and a child will need adult help to build. It was quite difficult for me to build, bit not overwhelmingly difficult. The pictures they show for the next pieces to add on are quite a few pieces making it difficult to follow. I can see they did this to save on printing costs. They did however have different colored pieces then the ones provided to assist in showing the next pieces that are to be added on.They also provide a few extra pieces in case of breakage which is nice. The plastic is flexible that I didn't have it happen.Really neat to see it float in a pond. Basically a non powered classic RC sailboat which is fun and neat to see floating for a child. Seeing something you build come to fruitation is really pleasing for a child. My son loves it.

Too complicated for the age level
My son's grandmother bought this for him because he loves to build and it seemed like both an educational and a toy with a purpose. However, the instructions are difficult even for an adult--the colors don't line up, the angles of the shots not very helpful, etc. Also although the toy says 8+, I would recommend it for 10 if not 12 +. My son has no problem building with legos, tinkertoys, etc. that are recommended 2-4 years older than his age; however, this set was difficult for both of us at times. Dad (or Mom, grandpa, whatever), you'll be doing about 30 minutes of the sail and rigging while your child sits and watches. Also the premise behind the toy is nobel in spirit, but silly in practice. Essentially the idea is that kids can play with recycled trash to form some pretty neat toys; however, 99% of the toy is not recycled material but more plastic. How this is going to save third world children (yes that is an implied goal as stated in the instructions) is beyond me.
