Awesome story
I got told about this from another friend... I will definitely have to read more. This is a great idea for a fantasy story that is a different take, and I love the originality.

A Different Kind of Hero
What an interesting book. The hero is so physically unusual. He, Jelly, has a progressive viewpoint, though based at all times on his owner being safe. The peril a princess can get into can be deadly for her pet as well.I'm looking forward to the next book. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a fresh look at being a hero.

A great story, marred by terrible editing.
The core concept is intriguing. The characters are interesting people who feel realistic. The pacing is solid, taking time where appropriate and establishing mood properly and balancing apprehension against excitement well. The author is clearly a very talented storyteller, and this should have been a five-star book for me but...The writing is extremely unpolished, like you would expect from a talented highschooler making fanfic, not a professional author. Occasional improper word choice, frequently mixing up who/whom, jarring transitions between modern colloquialisms and archaic speech patterns (either style would work, but switching between the two sounds terrible), even switching which character is delivering a chunk of exposition mid paragraph. Basic mistakes that even a novice should be able to catch on a quick read-through, left in through publishing like we're reading the rough draft of a great piece of literature. And the unique perspective of the protagonist and its nonstandard sensory capabilities, which would have added a great deal of depth to the narration if they were taken advantage of properly, is almost completely overlooked. An ooze in this setting can perceive great detail in all directions, even through solid objects, but in a very limited range and without differentiating colors unless specifically focusing on them. But the narration only reflects that in the introductory chapter before diving into lengthy descriptions of the colors of people's fancy outfits on the other side of vast ballrooms, and never mentioning the inside of a cupboard or the contents of someone's pockets again. The protagonist mentions having great difficulty reading facial expressions but reading emotions through an empathic sense, then proceeds to describe everyone's reactions to things in terms of facial expression. It's almost as if the author keeps forgetting who his POV character is.Overall I did definitely enjoy the book and will certainly be picking up the next in the series, but Mr. Rodgers really needs an editor, or at least a beta reader.

a great story!
I love this! It’s a new take on the monster as mc and I love the way it’s structured. The pacing is good and I want more. Looking forward to the next one!

Not sure why
I'm not sure why I'm writing this review. I normally won't.I liked the perspective of the main character, a monster but not in the accepted mold of horrific and threatening, but not a human in some kind of trapped body either. I do hope the slime learns more uses for its ability to morph shape but it (he?) shouldn't become a human even if it's shape can better approximate that shape. The secondary character, the young princess Liliana, was well developed and fortunately not as most YA types hopelessly chasing after one suitor or another. She as well was not an air head nor a scheming brat out for her own wants. I think her character will be able to grow and support the indicated struggles any future book(s) may show. There were holes in the back story - Why were the Darples (sp) wanting to assasinate the King, How are the characters given/earning their rankings, but none of these were detrimental to the story line. There were several grammatical errors. That caused me to stop and figure out what was being said or done, but even they didn't take much away from the storyline.I can easily see where this arc could go on for several books before reaching its conclusion, what I can't see is whether the storyline will become more YA, SciFi, or Romance based. My preference would be a meld of SciFi/YA without delving intp rough language or sexual drama. After completing the book, which is just about the right length by the way, I really found myself looking for the next story. I hope a good editor can pick up this series and that this young author continues to grow and produce interesting stories. As an aside the illustrator has done a bang up job on both of the book covers this author has written.

Jelly
Loved it. Jelly is a curious and loyal slime. It was fun to read as he/it grew an interacted with the humans around him. There are spelling and grammar mistakes where words are repeated. The book could benefit from a better proof reader. However this does not put me off from wanting to read a sequel.

Previous reviews lied.
Writing is atrocious with the constant tense switching. Constant exposition dump from both the narrator and the charactors; at times I can't tell the difference between the two. Dialogue doesn't feel natural. Theres no real tension or threat. I'm a sucker for good concepts, which this is one. So, even though the execution was terrible, I'm going to chance the second book.

Wonderfully well written
Wonderfully well written, a warm and engaging story and got me hooked very quickly. Story flows easily and the amount of character development makes for a rich read. The only bad part is going to be the wait for the next book

Nice story.
Pros : good writing style. Very readable. Story that makes you slightly happy to read.Cons: lack of real tension or threats/obstacles for the protagonist. Breezes through almost everything.
