Breaking Creed (Ryder Creed Book 1)

Good storytelling, with plenty of action, a dreadful villain & lovable dogs
The protagonist is Ryder Creed, a tall handsome veteran who's turned his experience in the marines as a K2 handler into a thriving business with search dogs. His dogs are variously trained to find dead bodies, drugs, and/or bombs. Creed is more comfortable with dogs than people. They're helping him heal from Afghanistan.I'm not much of a dog lover, but I enjoy fictional dogs. Creed's dogs have lovable personalities, and the things they're trained to do are pretty amazing. Creed makes clever use of their talents in a particularly tense scene. At the same time he looks out for their welfare like a fond parent. The plot revolves around a nasty drug lord who uses noxious insects and reptiles for torture and murder. He's kept himself hidden even from his own henchmen. He's called the Iceman; his icy sadism is legendary, even among fellow bad guys.FBI agent O'Dell, from the Maggie O'Dell series, appears in this book. She and Creed are attracted to each other, which injects a mildly romantic element into the plot. She' also an admirable character in her own right -- an insightful investigator who's courageous and good with guns. She likes dogs too.I read Silent Creed before this book, taking the series backwards as sometimes happens. Both are well done thrillers -- good storytelling with appealing heroes (human and canine). I find Alex Kava's style very relaxing. The narrative is straightforward without obtuse literary devices. This promises to be a good series.

Dogs, hero veterans, and deadly creepy crawlers - what’s not too like?
A fun and captivating read. The hero’s relationship with his dogs, and bringing out the dogs’ actual personalities (I am sure we will see more of this in future stories) - is a really unique and cool approach. The author’s involvement of the dogs - to me - is reminiscent of some of Dean Koontz’ earlier works. Likewise, the disabled veterans rehabilitation through the storyline and the dogs is heartening, but not overdone or phony. Throw in a mystery killer whose mode of operation is deadly critters (your skin will crawl), a murderous drug cartel, government corruption, and a developing love interest - and you have all the ingredients for a fun read. I found the book difficult to put down and read it very quickly - which is really how I rate an action/adventure novel.

Breaking Creed ( A Ryder Creed Novel book 1 )
Breaking Creed , my first time reading one of Alex Kava books,Loved this story, always love reading about rescue dogs .Big fan of this story that included Grace being saved , most of all how smart Grace and the rest of these trained dogs were to help Creed capture these bad guys with Jason help . This story was amazing . This type of thing happens to kids all the time but was very happy to read that Amanda got the help she needed to save herself. Look forward to reading more of your Novels.Cindy Riley

Kava, O'Dell and Creed - perfection!
I was already a fan of Alex Kava and her Maggie O'Dell series. Maggie is, by far, one of the very best female characters in the genre. You have to love her spunk, her caring attitude, her quirks but most of all her "I don't care what you think or say, I have to get the job done" attitude! The dialogue between Maggie and her supervisor, the totally annoying Kunze, are priceless. Why? Because Maggie knows she is right. Now, you take Maggie O'Dell and couple her with Ryder Creed. Well, pure magic!!! How can you not love Creed and, furthermore, how can you not love the two of them together. Add to that mix the ever-opinionated Hannah and what more could you ask for in a book!!! I really enjoyed Breaking Creed. The last 20 pages of the book were incredible. Unfortunately, I finished it much to quickly and now have to wait until July for the next Creed book. I am hoping to "see" Maggie in this one too. If not, I know we will meet up with her again and, fingers crossed, with Cred. Thank you, Ms. Kava, for amazing stories and the time spent enjoying them.

Good book with some minor flaws
This is a good book, especially if you are a dog lover. She does an very good job explaining how a dog is used to find drugs. One fact she did get wrong is that a dog would never be crossed train to look for different items. A dog trained to look for drugs, would never also be trained to look for bodies or explosives. But the author did this to moved a plot point across, so it was forgivable. The characters are well developed and are interesting. Her action scenes are good, but not great. Why did I give it 4 stars then. The ending is abrupt. The bad guy is revealed with no build up, and the explanation is too implausible. But I must admit, that many good authors have trouble with their endings. I would recommend this book, and I would especially recommend it to dog lovers.
