an absolute gem for 5 Gal / nano setups
bought this after trying 4 different sponge filter and air stone setups. and wasn't happy with the complete lack of mechanical filtration they provided. after seeing another review of this, where a video was posted it made me reconsider and purchase this immediately. the bottom cannister part of this is nearly completely open, where the cartridges go, and the blue bio grid thing. after running this for a couple weeks with the included cartridge, I swapped it out for some basic white filter floss media, thereby negating the need for cartridges ever again. it's clarified my tank significantly, and I now have a 5 gal betta tank that's crystal clear, and dead silent. I have it mounted horizontally with the bottom edge where the inlet is,, about 1 inch above my substrate. and the nozzle orientated vertically (It swivels) at 90 deg. and the output nozzle pointed just ever so slightly to one side. and pointed at the back wall of my tank. this helps the flow go up the back wall, to the surface to get surface agitation, and also keeps it from turning the tank into a whirlpool and gentle enough to where my Betta when deciding to get wild swims into the flow and doesn't get smacked into the tank at all. overall this is by far the best little aqueon filter I've ever used in like 6+ years in the hobby, and I plan on getting a 2nd one as a spare.

Great pump. Too powerful. Easy fix
It’s small, it’s quiet. It’s very powerful. Too powerful. I have a 6 gallon tank and the outflow was turning it into a whirlpool. Just drill some holes in the outflow pipe to fix that.

Decent filter Not for 10 gal
I bought this filter for a 3 gal hold tank and it worked great but it's struggling when I moved up to 10 gal. I strongly recommend removing the crappy filter provided and replace with filter floss. The filter provided does nothing to remove floating particles in the water which I am fighting now because of a piece of Driftwood I added to the tank. The filter floss works great but I find I have to replace it often which is not too good for biological filtration. I also have a pond so I can modify the filter further with my pond supplies. I have thought about replacing this filter but I'm not sure for the size of tank that I have I will find anything much better without whipping my betta around. Diy is key with this filter.

10 times better than my last pump
I had a pump from another manufacturer who I won’t name, but it was “brand name” let’s say. I had it in my 10 gallon tank, home to one plecos and a very entertaining mystery snail. The pump was making me crazy with a rattling fan that I could not get to shut up after trying to take it apart, clean it, etc.I finally gave up and ordered this little gem. Not only is it truly whisper quiet but it got my water crystal clear. I can’t believe how effective this pump is at keeping the water clean. I feel bad for waiting as long as I did. Side note, I worried with such powerful suction it might harm my snail, but so far he’s been doing great, no issues.Do yourself a big favor and upgrade to this pump for your smaller tanks!

Becomes progressively louder
At first, I was extremely happy with the noise level of this filter. There was an initial rattling noise that went away after a few minutes of the filter adjusting to being in my aquarium. All went extremely well until I attempted to take the filter apart just to rinse it during the water change and put it back. There was some intermittent rattling similar to when I first put the filter in the tank, but I thought the sound would go away. However, after that initial week my filter has never been quiet again. It has continued to rattle incessantly and is even more annoying than the sponge filter I originally had because this is SUPPOSED to be quiet. At least the sponge filter had somewhat soothing bubble noises! While the sponge filter isn’t exactly pretty, it worked perfectly fine. The only reason I changed filters was because the sponge filter was too loud for my purposes and agitated the water too much. This filter is very efficient at cleaning the tank, but considering that a main selling point is it’s quietness, it gets one star. This thing is annoying the ever loving heck out of me. 🙃 I am going to call customer service to see if they can help me return this filter to its former silence, and if they do I am happy to change my review.Edit: And now it’s completely dead. Useless.

Works Fine
Suction cup broke off when installing it but I was still able to attach it to the tank.

Silent
This filter is great for small aquariums and does a good job at cleaning debris. I love how silent it is. I have it in an aquarium next to my bed and I don’t hear a thing at night. Definitely worth it!

It’s a good filter. But a bit too strong.
The filter is really really loud. I don’t really recommend this for betta or for anything really. Edit: fixed the mistake I had the filter too close to the surface and it had air bubbles inside. My only complaint is that the current is too strong for my ten gallon betta aquarium.
