Original Album Series Presents: Montrose - The Warner Bros. Years
Original Album Series Box Set Review:This box set contains all the Warner Bros. Montrose Records from the 70's (1973-1978). A few things. 1. None of the CD's appear overcompresed or remastered for that matter. 2. The disc sound great; however, and do not distort when cranked up, which for the loudness wars crowd will make a difference. 3. The 5 star rating is for the complete works included here. 4. Two of these CD's, Warner Bros Presents and Open Fire are climbing to higher prices for the individual CD's so you can grab them in this set for a fraction of the price. 5. The box set is simple with each CD housed in its original album artwork cardboard sleeve. There is no booklet or bells and whistles. Now on to the Music.1. Montrose - Montrose. (5 out 5 Legendary Album) If you need a history lesson on this first CD take a look around the net, you'll find everything you need to know. Montrose, Sammy Hagar with a just over 32 minute 8 song masterpiece. Pick a track, any track- they are all great. Some are the stuff legends are made of and those tracks include- Rock The Nation, Bad Motor Scooter, Space Station #5, Rock Candy, and Good Rockin' Tonight. This is a top 10 70's rock fest.2. Paper Money - (3.5 out of 5 Stars) While this falls short of the historic effort made with the first CD, there are plenty of excellent tracks here. They are: Paper Money, I Got The Fire, Spaceage Sacrifice, and one of my favorites Connection.3. Warner Bros Presents - (4 out of 5 stars) With Sammy Hagar departed and line up changes This effort returned to a more guitar oriented hard rockin' affair. Don't let that stop you. Bob James can really sing and the song writing is very good. Top Tracks are: Matriarch, Twenty Flight Rock, Dancin' Feet and the dark themed Black Train.4. Jump On It - (3.5 out of 5 Stars)- This album is a bit more diverse and a bit less hard rockin' then Warner Bros. Presents. Bob James remains on vocals and delivers another stellar effort as does Ronnie with some really good guitar work and song writing. Top Tracks are: Lets Go, What Are You Waiting For, Jump On It and one of my favorites the slow jam Rich Man.5. Open Fire - (3 out 5 stars) Ronnie's first instrumental affair with guest musician Edgar Winter assisting on some of the work here. This is not my favorite Instrumental work by Ronnie. (that being The Speed of Sound off Enigma Records in 1988. This is solid 70's rock with jazz influences and some interesting guitar work.Pics of the box set uploaded for your viewing.

Great compilation of CD's with great sound, but Amazon disappoints..
The CD's are great. I was thrilled to find a set of five CD's that saved us money over buying each one separately. Open Fire is nearly impossible to find, which is a great demonstration of Ronnie's true talent. We have the vinyl album of Open Fire and never play it anymore. Ronnie's original Montrose album is a powerhouse of sound and innovention from its debut forward. The compact box of CD's consists of five small jackets each containing a CD. These cardboard jackets look like mini vinyl album covers, which was perfect for safekeeping. We are so pleased with the purchase. His music lives on, and we bought 7 of the compilations to give as gifts to family for Easter. Ronnie's nieces, nephews, and brothers were thrilled with our gift. We cherish our memories of the man.Herein lies my problem with Amazon: I am disappointed to see the CD set went down in price by > $7.00, and I ordered 7 of them, so I feel Amazon should give a refund. I noticed the drop in price before we even received our CD's. My order created a demand, apparently, and Amazon is choosing not to refund the difference. I could have ordered 7 more, sent back 7 intact, but I just wanted them to do what was right by giving me a refund of $50 (a little more than $50). They have yet to answer my inquiry. I am so disappointed in Amazon. We are Prime members for as long as it exists, and yet we pay more than others pay for the same product.Count me as an unhappy Amazon purchaser with this transaction. I didn't want to be upset with Amazon.

Great set, great packaging. But the CDs sound flat. Good try, though.
This is one terrific set! I love the compact packaging with each CD in its own sleeve like an old LP. Cool! But to me, what is on these CDs, lacks the punch we come to expect from this 16 bit technology. The sound is rather flat and lacking bass. Was expecting more from these Rhino releases. Here in the states Wounded Bird released most of these CDs that didn't sound any better than these. May be the tapes that exists, I don't know. All I do know, they sound flat. At least the tape hiss is gone! Of course, the older ones sound the least impressive where as Jump On It sounds the best (and that's not saying much). But we buy this collection for the "actual" music and not "how it sounds". Maybe with our high technologies here in 2012 we expect these to sound brand new, but its not gonna happen. These are awesome recordings from one of (to me) the greatest guitarist that ever lived (sorry David Gilmour, you're number two). And for this cheap price (under twenty dollars) this is a great set, just wished it sounded better. Maybe one day, a great sound mixer will tinker with the original recordings and bring out details we never heard before. That is what I miss most about the SACD format. That format gave music a new life! But that's a whole new discussion.

Who was Ronnie Montrose?
The above question is, or is not, answered in the very economical five disc set if five original Montrose records. The evidence presented here documents he could play very creditably in multiple formats. The recordings also show that Ronnie was searching for his sound. While his journey produced some very fine albums, it also is ultimately les s than totally satisfying. I bought this very reasonably-priced collection primarily for the all-instrumental 'Open Fire' album.

Great first album then downhill
I think the title some this up but we already knew that, the cost of the box set is worth for the first album alone

so this set for the price of one looked like a good deal
I used to have the first album, so this set for the price of one looked like a good deal.Unfortunately, the other four albums in this box are quite disappointing and do not live up to what you'd expect after hearing the first one. What a shame, but hey, the 1st one still ROCKS !
