doge says: much yuck. do not want. (at first... then do want!) (with updates!)
Update 10/15/2025: Hi there, me again. Now that it is 8 years later, Barney's adopted little brother Maximus is well into his senior years. He's in great shape for his age, which we estimate to be around 13 years (he's a rescue pittie), but he's started showing some signs of cognitive decline - restlessness, pacing, and panting, especially at night. We are managing his relatively mild arthritis stiffness with meds from our vet, thinking that's why he was so agitated, but the cognitive symptoms persisted. That's when I remembered how much this supplement helped our Barney all those years ago. We've been loyal to the Maxxi brand this whole time - Max gets the Omega oil and MaxxiDigest on his food daily to help with his coat and tummy (ya boy gets some serious diarrhea and gas that'll knock you out without it) - so I can't believe it took me this long to remember that MaxxiSAMe exists. Unlike Barney, Max gobbles this stuff right up with his food, no weird cheese sushi roll required. Thank you, MaxxiPaws, for continuing to put out a quality product. ---- Final Barney update 5/24/2017: This will be my final update to this review, as we unfortunately had to say goodbye to our wonderful dog Barney last week after his slow onset of degenerative myleopathy had progressed too far. I cannot say enough good things about the MaxxiDog company as they helped us find solutions to make Barney's last year+ as comfortable and happy as it could be. I truly believe that the MaxxiSAMe product had a positive effect for Barney and was key in making his last time with us a happy one, as it really seemed to help mitigate his symptoms of Canine Cognitive Dysfunction (CCD). I have changed my review to five stars to reflect this. Please continue reading below for the original review, and the other updates on how we ended up using the product. (Spoiler: The most effective way to get Barney to eat it was to do two small pumps of MaxxiOmega oil with it to make a paste, and then put the paste in American cheese like a weird little sushi roll! He never turned his nose up at this option.) Thank you again to the MaxxiDog company for your excellent product and wonderful customer service. ---- (Original review:) My dog Barney is well into his golden years and has is showing some pretty strong signs of canine cognitive dysfunction (CCD; basically, doggie dementia) such as night waking/panting, getting lost or stuck in corners, licking, digging at the floor, and fecal incontinence. So, I powered up the ol' computer and did some research. It turns out there isn't a ton you can do for it once they've got it, but there are supplements that can help manage some of the symptoms and keep it from progressing as quickly. Enter: SAMe and choline. These two seemed to pop up the most in my searches but my head was spinning about what product to buy. Well, this MaxxiSAMe stuff handily has both! Awesome! Now, a little bit about Barney - Barney has been anywhere from 77 to 90 pounds since I've known him. This dog LOVES to eat. He's not picky, either - he eats 'yard treats' (if you catch my drift) regularly, for goodness sake. He once ate a raw zucchini off the floor (and immediately threw it up, but that's beside the point). Now that we've been more careful about his portion sizes he acts like we're starving him to death (I assure you, we are not) and scavenges even more. But as soon as I put this stuff on his food, Barney went on a hunger strike. He will NOT touch the stuff. It's crazy. I even tried burying cheese in his bowl thinking he'd at least eat his way down to the cheese - NOPE. Not interested. I really wish this came in pill form. I've resorted to trying to squish the dosage up in cheese and give it to him that way, which is pretty difficult since he is on the highest dosage (1 tsp per dosage, twice a day), and the supplement needs to be inside the cheese for him to eat it. I have made some messes. I think my next attempt may involve deli meat since that won't fall apart like cheese slices... though now I have visions of Barney biting into the powder ball in the meat and causing an explosion. He's only had his full dosage(ish... the part that hasn't scattered out of the cheese all over the floor anyway) for a day or two. If I notice some improvement or come up with a better method of administration, I'll absolutely come back and edit my review. I really, really want to love this product. But for now, I give it 5 stars in theory and Barney gives it a 1 star in taste so we'll compromise and call it a 3. ---- UPDATE 4/28/2016: We went through two jars of this stuff, and multiple administration methods (since adding it straight to dry food was NOT an option). First I'll talk about the effects it has had on him, and then I will talk about how we've been giving it to him. EFFECTS: After giving him two jars of this, I didn't buy a third. After a few days of not being on it, his CCD symptoms increased fairly dramatically - walking around panting/whining at night, getting lost in corners, pooing inside, etc. He was still doing some of those things SOMETIMES, so it's possible that the timing of his symptoms was coincidental with stopping the MaxxiSAMe. However, I had forgotten just how bad his symptoms used to be, especially the night symptoms - we were all sleeping very terribly for a few days there. So I bought another jar hoping it would help him, and I think it has. We all slept through the night better the last couple of nights, anyway! This is why I've upped my rating to 4 stars (was previously 3). ADMINISTRATION: Oh boy. Well, the folks at MaxxiSAMe were kind enough to respond to my review in both email form and comment form (below) and include some ideas for getting him to take it, which is super awesome of them. Here is what we've tried, and what has and hasn't worked - 1. Paste method: Add a small amount of water to make a thick paste. Give to dog like treat. This worked for maybe a couple of weeks, and now he just turns his nose away from it when I try to give it to him this way. The MaxxiSAMe folks also suggested mixing it with something he likes, but I don't think this would work, for reasons I'll get to in a moment. 2. Soft food method: Barney was on meds that made his stomach upset for a while, so to get him to eat, I would add warm water to his dry kibble food to make it soft and appealing. I could add the MaxxiSAMe directly to the soft food and he'd eat it right up. *shrug* 3. Paste + cheese method: This is what we're doing now. I add a VERY small amount of water to make a thick paste, which I form into a ball with my fingers. Then I smash cheese around it so that none (or at least very little) of the MaxxiSAMe ball is showing. If it is showing, he will not touch the stuff - or sometimes will sort of "work" at it to get the cheese off and spit the MaxxiSAMe out. This is why I don't think it would work to mix the paste with something he enjoys: he would still know the MaxxiSAMe is in there. I think this method would work better with lunch meat, but that's not something we normally have around the house, and it goes bad faster than cheese slices. This method would probably work okay with a PillPocket type treat that has a large enough pocket. So, in conclusion, Barney still thinks the stuff is super gross which makes administration a bit of an ordeal, but I have reason to believe it might be helping his CCD so that outweighs any difficulties in giving it to him. I do still wish it came in tablet form; I picture it being like Cosequin, where it's not a coated tablet but more of a compressed powder type tablet that can be broken if needed. Thanks again to the makers of this product for supplying such a high quality product, and for responding to reviews in such a thoughtful, detailed way! ---- UPDATE 6/17/2016: After my last update, the owners of MaxxiSAMe were not content that Barney still wasn't super into the stuff. They actually sent me a free bottle of their MaxxiOmega oil to try mixing that with the MaxxiSAMe, which is super awesome of them. Turns out, it totally worked. I mix his SAMe dosage with about a pump and a half of the oil, smear it on a piece of cheese and wrap the cheese sushi-style, and he gobbles it right up. He still won't QUITE eat it without cheese (though he acts like he MIGHT when I've offered it to him), but I at least don't have to try to smash the cheese all around it to hide every speck of the MaxxiSAMe. Thank you!!

The SAMe is helping and the cognitive benefit is huge (update)
I previously gave our 10-yr old pointer a chewable SAMe tablet to help control unexplained elevated liver values, but manufacturer changed the formula and our dog would no longer eat it unless buried in food. Since it needed to be given on an empty stomach, that was not ideal. I regularly search for any alternative products--finding nothing much different--and suddenly there was MaxxiSAMe claiming to be fine given with food. Information on the product said it was beneficial for liver health as well as cognitive function. I wasn't looking for the latter, but didn't think it would be in any way a harmful effect. After a brief period of slowly introducing this powder--she didn't care for the flavor, due I assume to the heavy artichoke taste--she began happily eating her food with this supplement in it. It was helpful that she gets some wet food; when it was just dry food the powder would fall to the bottom more readily and got left there. After several weeks we were surprised to notice that she was reverting to more energetic, alert, puppy-like behaviors, and since nothing else had changed we attribute this to improved cognitive function from MaxxiSAMe. I have recommended MaxxiSAMe to my veterinarian who agreed it looks great and seems worthy of trial by other patients. I gave it only 4 stars because the taste was a hurdle for our dog to get over. Also--although I have no reason to blame this product--her liver values have increased a bit, which is not uncommon for her from time to time anyway; but I give her SAMe to manage them so time will tell how they might fluctuate as she stays on this product. As long as they don't spiral out of control, the SAMe is helping, and the cognitive benefit is huge. UPDATE 11/26/17 -- Recently my pointer had her liver values checked again and they were much lower than before! That was the only hold-up in giving this product five stars, so now I can do that and confirm that this product has been great. I have come to trust this company and also have started my dog on their MaxxiFlex joint supplement to help with her arthritis and this is helping her too.

My girl has cancer and it still works wonders!
My dog, Ginny, has liver cancer. She can still live longer as long as we keep a very close eye on her blood values and diet. I could not afford the expensive Denamarin. I put her on this along with a cheap Milk Thistle supplement and give both twice daily. Within 3 days her coat became more luxurious. It was shiny and silky where before it was dull and dry. I'm going to do a little TMI but her poop went from bright orange to normal and it also helped the GI upset that she had been having, also due to her liver cancer. I mean, I want to stop short of saying that this thing is a "miracle drug" simply because I am a human nurse and there is no such thing. Still, I never would have imagined how well this worked out for her. If I had to say something I don't like it would be the flavor, which needs enhancing. The flavor was not something she cared for. I started mixing it with some yogurt and a very little applesauce. She really likes it with that and the yogurt and applesauce also help the GI upset. My veterinarian was skeptical. She insisted that I buy Denamarin but as I said, I cannot afford it. However, when she saw her liver values after only a month and a half, she was sold. She wants me to bring the container when I finish with it so she can recommend it to others to see if that helps them. This is much cheaper than anything else that I can find on the market, if you find something else, please comment and let me know. I did miss a couple of doses due to emergency circumstances (I broke my hand and had to have surgery) and I will say that within two days she was back to orange poops and her fur changed back to dry and dull. About that same time I figured out how to handle it with my giant cast with pins and such. All in all, I really stand by this stuff. I would say it is probably pretty healthy for dogs without illness but check with your own vet first, of course. You can never be too sure.

Taste issue-Update
Update: I am changing my review to four stars. I have figured a way to mix this with treats. He also will not eat it unless I, oddly, put the spoonful of product mixed with treats/food on the ceramic floor (as if it's a treat). So, since my first review, I have figured out how to get this into him. I do feel it is making a difference and also has increased his appetite which is a plus as he is 25 years old. I do recommend this product. For years I have given my older dogs SAMe as from my experience it does wonders for older dogs with aging issues. I have a 6 lb. little guy that I could not give the larger milligram pills to and found this product which is loose powder. I have been giving it to my little guy for over a week with difficulty. I mix a bit of water, and mix whatever I think will mask the taste. Finally, today I tasted a tiny bit myself and spit it out as fast as I could, rinsed my mouth with water, but the awful taste lasted. I don't know what else I can use to try and mask the taste, but this is pricy and I think the manufacturer should have done something to help make this taste more acceptable to the dog.

IT WORKS!
I have a 15 year old Chihuahua diagnosed with liver issues when I took him in to be neutered 14 years ago (still almost a puppy). So, he has lived with very high liver enzymes most of his life....and when I say high, extremely high to the point that most vets question if the blood panel came back correctly. Long story short, he's lived a long and good life with no symptoms up until 2 to 3 years ago. That's when I started him on this product, maxxiSAMe. I sprinkled a little on his food in the morning and at night. I never really knew what it was doing except that symptoms were NOT worsening. Well, that jar lasted over a year, but when I ran out and he was off of this for a few weeks, the strange behavior returned and became more noticeable. He was circling, disoriented, lethargic and more aggressive. I got him right back on the maxxiSAMe again when the new jar arrived. Without a doubt, the symptoms of the liver issues eased up. Now, I don't want to give false hope. I have NOT found this to be a miracle drug, and it will not cure liver damage from all I've read and researched, but I strongly believe IT HELPS PREVENT more damage to the liver and keeps dogs with liver issues stabilized to some extent. I know this to be true on my dog anyway. To end, even in the past 3 months I started switching the maxxiSAMe at nights for some hemp oil to help with my dog's arthritis, and although the hemp oil helped, the lack of the maxxiSAMe at nights was noticeable. My dog started head pressing worse than I ever saw him at nights. He got very disoriented until I got him back on this product again TWICE a day rather than just one dose in the mornings. The trick for me has been to give a little on his food in the morning and a little in the evening. My baby is old and in the very late or end stages of the liver disease, no doubt, but as long as he's eating well, comfortable and not in extreme pain, I can't and I won't put him down. He's not ready to leave this world yet, but I can strongly verify that this product has made a difference and has given him more time on earth and more quality of life than if he was not on it.

Must try!
My 16yr old Shihtzu has been on this for 4 weeks now. New blood tests taken yesterday indicate his ALT value is down from 663 to 415. It's still much too high but that's a huge reduction in just 4 weeks. An added plus is improvement in his cognitive behavior and general mood. He's in great shape for a 16yr old pup. The only health issue being high liver values and a slight cognitive degeneration. Vet wants to keep him on this product and check liver values again in three months. I'll update this review then with the newest test results. My baby never showed any aversion to the taste of this supplement, but I split it up between his daily meals. And to be fair, he eats really well. A little powder mixed in with his royal highness's five star chow went unnoticed. He's had no unwanted side effects. No tummy upset. No diarrhea. It's all been good for him. The cost? If it works, it's well worth the cost. And it'll last a lonnng time. Read the label and be sure to refrigerate after opening. Best of luck to all you fur parents looking for answers for your little loved ones' health.

Amazing Product, Great Company and Customer Service!!
Back in January our 14 year old Miniature Schnauzer Jax started having episodes of stumbling and losing his balance. Thinking it was an ear infection we went to our vet but they didn't find anything. They suggested we see a neurologist for further evaluation. They could not confirm what was going on without a very expensive CT scan but offered to do blood work to see if they could find anything there. The results showed that his liver enzymes were very elevated and could most likely be the cause of his symptoms. I did not feel comfortable with putting him on prescription medication and did my research to find a natural way to help my boy feel better. We did try a SAMe product in tablet form and didn't have much success getting him to take it. I then came across MaxxiSAMe and thought it had to be an easier way and it sure was! Jax had made great progress since then. I say it's like we turned the clock back 7 years. He is active again, playing with toys and very alert and aware! At a recent trip to the vet for a routine check up the vet was amazed at his results. However his new blood work did not show any decrease in liver enzymes but at 14 I am just happy he is feeling good and enjoying life. The vet found that his thyroid was low and calcium high and hoped that treating Jax for a low thyroid with medication may change the calcium. against my better judgement we tried it and it failed us. He lost his appetite which means he wasn't eating or getting your product and wasn't feeling good again. We quickly stopped the thyroid medication and within a few days he was eating, getting his MaxxiSAMe and back to himself again. I will only be giving him natural supplements from now on. I was hoping to wait for his labs to show a medical reason why he was feeling better and to report our results but seeing him happy is all I need and will hopefully give hope to someone out there going through a similar experience. After contacting the company, Asa was very kind to contact me personally and give me some advise of doubling the dosage to see if that affects his liver values in his next blood panel. Asa also recommended an additional product that could help with the thyroid issue naturally, MaxxiDigest Plus so we will be giving that a try as well. Thank you for this amazing product!!

Did not help, and hard to give on an empty stomach
There are two problems I have with this product: 1) It did nothing for my cat's liver enzyme levels after 6 months of recommended dosage on an empty stomach. The numbers got worse, despite additional application of Pet Wellbeing - Milk Thistle for Cats - Natural Support for Feline Liver health - 2oz (59ml) that whole time. 2) According to all my research, SAM-e must be given on an empty stomach for both humans and pets, otherwise it is much less effective. How do you give a cat some loose powder on an empty stomach? That's right, you put it in capsules. So I had to get capsules and spend quite a bit of time filling them. Then I had to convince the cat to take them, so I had to buy Pill Pockets also. Now it's not quite an empty stomach, and a lot of work. I'm switching to Denamarin, despite the costs, and I'll retest in a few months.

MIRACLE PRODUCT
MIRACLE PRODUCT!! This in my opinion is the two words that sum up this product; the results to me have been astounding, and I truly do believe this product has saved my dog (Shankly’s) life. I have attached photos from his blood tests prior to have his supplements and his blood test 7 weeks later, after having 7 weeks worth of supplements, just so you can see the difference!! This is going to be a very in-depth review, so please bear with me on this. So in a nutshell and a quick brief on my dogs background/medical history; he is on steroids for the rest of his life due to a medical condition known in short as MMM, basically this is where his immune system attacked his jaw and head muscles and caused severe and excruciating painful inflammation, in order for this condition to be kept at bay he requires steroids for the rest of his life. Obviously steroids are known to be very hard on the liver long term, we monitor his bloods regularly, and unfortunately his liver was showing signs of strain on his last blood test, so we were advised to put him on liver supplements. He did have bloods done a month and half prior to this and all was ok, but I felt something wasn’t quite right with him as he appeared tired all the time, to the point he looked shattered, and was showing less enthusiasm on his walks, so I went in with a full blood panel at the vets, and this is when we received news that his liver was showing signs of strain. The vet recommended Samylin, which we were willing to put him on, this would cost us £140 per month for him to be placed on these supplements. I wanted to source a more natural alternative if possible, and hopefully something what was more affordable. I come across this product on Amazon, read all the reviews and looked at the ingredients in MaxxiSAMe to see how they compared to Samylin. I gave MaxxiPaws a call, they were absolutely fantastic; I was obviously very upset when I called due to blood test results, the lady on the phone was able to calm me down, she listened to what I had to say without rushing me and explained about the MaxxiSAMe product, they also emailed me information about their product and FAQ’s, and hints and tips on how to administer the supplement powder. I obviously sent the information the MaxxiPaws team sent me, across to my vet, who confirmed it contained the same as the (expensive) Samylin, alongside extra added vitamins and said this would be ok to place Shankly on. The only difference the vet stated, is that silybin/silymarin component comes from the artichoke plant, as opposed to the milk thistle plant. But looking into this myself, and also in discussing this with the MaxxiPaws team, the artichoke is the better source for the silybin/silymarin to come from. The dosage for the main components that is used in the MaxxiSAMe, is the same as the Samylin therefore you are getting the exact same product as what the vet prescribed, but at a fraction of the cost, and you also get the added benefits of the extra vitamins, so you get a lot more bang for your buck. Within a couple of days of Shankly taking the supplement I noticed he appeared to be getting more energy, although it was very subtle at this stage, he seemed to be awake more and have more pep in his step, by day 3, his increase in energy levels were more noticeable, and more people were noticing this, not just myself. This made me super happy and was an absolute joy to see! I thought something must be moving in the right direction due to what I am seeing, his movements were a lot quicker, he was running up and down the stairs a lot quicker, jumping in the car a lot quicker, showing more enthusiasm when asking if he wanted to go on a walk, and also wasn’t laying down immediately after a walk. I would say after 3 weeks his energy levels were what they had been prior to his liver being under strain, at this point, me and my husband were feeling quietly confident that his next set of bloods would show improvement. The MaxxiPaws team were also optimistic to, as they said this is one of the first things a lot of owners noticed when they first gave their dog the supplement, the increase in energy levels. Shankly’s bilirubin levels, and bile acids were the main concern, as they were tittering on the edge of the ‘safe parameters’, although they were out of the normal range, his bilirubin was three times higher than what it should have been. He has been on this supplement for 6 and half weeks, to be precise, and on the recent blood test, his bilirubin was back in the normal parameters, as was his bile acids levels, and the rest of the liver enzymes! I was shocked, at how well his body has taken the supplement, I knew we would see a decrease in the enzyme levels, but not this much. It’s pretty amazing in such a short time frame his liver is operating healthily now and not showing signs of strain, I was absolutely over the moon with the results, and how much this has helped my boy. I cried with relief when we got those results in, and with tears of joy and happiness. This for me, is nothing short of a miracle, I honestly can’t thank the company MaxxiPaws enough for what their product has done for my dog, I truly believe they have saved his life. Not only that, but the support MaxxiPaws have provided me throughout these past 7 weeks has been phenomenal, I have been a nervous wreck due to worrying about my dog and his liver enzymes, the MaxxiPaws team have been there to support me every step of the way, allowing me to keep my anxiety under control and helping me to remain more optimistic. I have regularly kept in contact with them, to update them on Shanklys progress; they are always very happy to hear how well Shankly has been doing, and always get back to me. I wish more companies had the response to their customers that MaxxiPaws have; their customer service is impeccable, you really do feel, and know, that they are pet owners themselves and they take great pride and care in everything they do, they are such genuinely nice and caring people who’re keen to help your pet, and also to support you as an owner, through a tough time (as I found dealing with the liver enzyme issues of Shankly, very worrying and upsetting). It’s just so rare especially in the pet industry where you come across such an amazing company and a team of people (MaxxiPaws), who care as much as they do! For that I am truly, truly grateful, so much so that I feel words cannot express how grateful I am to them. Back on to the supplement, it is in powder form, which makes it fantastic to mix in with food. Shankly has his kibble soaked, and I add a quarter of a can of tuna in spring water and mix into a small portion of his kibble, to ensure he eats it all. He was a bit fussy at first, as dogs can be with new tasting things, but we got it down him, and this product works wonderfully, which is the main thing. Once he’s eaten this portion the rest of his meal is then placed down. The supplement comes with a scoop, allowing you to measure out the portion, and they recommend this is split between two meals, which we have been doing. His dose was double for the first few weeks, to help give his liver a good boost, and then the dose reduced a little bit more, and currently, 6 weeks in, he is on the maintenance dose. The MaxxiPaws team helped me with the support of what dose to place him on and then when to reduce it, as I just wanted to be sure that everything I was doing was correct and his liver was receiving the best support possible. Shankly weighs 27kg so using his maintenance dose of MaxxiSAMe, the tub lasts approximately a month. Shankly will remain on this supplement for the rest of his life, but I am perfectly fine with that, it’s all natural, which is fantastic for him and allows me to use the product with more confidence. I feel confident that all will be well now with Shankly and the continued use of supplements alongside his current medication which he has to have. I order mainly now, through their website, my first order was placed via Amazon as that’s where I initially saw the product, but, I have since joined the ‘MaxxiClub’ and receive a discount on any products I order through their website, you are also entered into a draw when you join the MaxxiClub, so you get a chance to win a free product in their draw, which is another perk. They donate to charities also, on a monthly basis, which is such a great thing for them to do as company, as I doubt many other companies have such kind gestures. Would I recommend this product to anybody whose dog has liver issues?! You bet I would. This product to my dog, has been a life saver, the results showing in his recent blood works are fantastic! I would without a shadow of a doubt recommend this product to any dog who needs it, I would also confidently use any of MaxxiPaws products on my dog if needs be, as I have that much confidence in their products and the company. April Update 2026 - My dogs blood tests come back as very good again, so happy that the product is continuing to do the good work.
