this wonderful compilation contains text by Edwina Gateley
Having been familiar with the work of Robert Lentz for many years, and being made aware of this incredible compilation by Kittredge Cherry - author of "Art That Dares" (which also features some of Lentz's work) as well as collaborator with Douglas Blanchard on "The Passion of Christ: A Gay Vision" (reviewed for Amazon on October 31, 2014) - I hastened to acquire it. What an extreme blessing! In addition, this wonderful compilation contains text by Edwina Gateley. Though I have not been previously acquainted with her writing, I am finding it a deeply inspirational and appropriate accompaniment for the artwork. Obviously, this is not a book to be read casually or quickly. It will be kept at hand for frequent inspiration. The format is not ostentatious, which permits the price to be reasonable, but the full-page plates of the icons are beautifully reproduced and the text is eminently readable. It will be cherished.

In From the Margins
The iconography of Robert Lentz has always pushed the margins and this book would be valuable for the illustrations alone, any one of which could serve as a spiritual focus for meditation. The brief stories of each subject invite the reader to delve further into that person's life and work.Gateley's longer reflections -- interspersed throughout the book -- explore some of the people represented here more fully and open up the complexity of the person in ways that the normal biographies of saints often avoid. As a spiritual director, I find this an invaluable book as it reminds us all that Christ is found on the margins of life and in the witness of those who live on the margins, often unnoticed by the news media or those in the centers of power and prestige. I would enjoy using this book with spiritual friends, but also with young people (14 - 25) who seem to yearn for stories of those who made a difference in spite of poverty, lack of education, disease, voicelessness, or age.

This is copy #3 of this beautiful book, intended as a gift for a friend. Have had the privilege to meet and hear both of the authors, which led me to seek the book. This copy has not arrived, as yet. But knowing it's' content is why I am reviewing it now. Wishing my friend to learn something of Brother Robert Lentz wonderful gift of producing icons and the spirituality that moves him. A Passion for Social Justice
The magnificence, imagination and cultural sensitivity of Robert Lentz's icons accompanied by his and Edwina Gateley's thoughtful and heartfelt essays inspire me every day. I bought a copy for myself, and then a copy for my pastor. A wonderful meditative accompaniment to morning coffee as I start each day . . .
