Q: Can this be hung from a cable with the feeder below the baffle?

I'm not sure of the question but mine is hung by a cable hooked to the bird feeder and sits over the top of it.

Q: Put it on my shepherd's hook but clamp keeps sliding down the pole, guess it isn't thick enough. Any suggestions as to how to make it work.

Your pole is not thick enough to keep it from sliding down - thanks to gravity. Wrap some duct tape just below where you want the guard to sit and that will keep it from sliding. The squirrels may chew on the tpe to get the guard to move, so you may need to reinforce the tape later. I found that squirels liked the fact that this guard can easily tilt. They would grab onto the edge and get themselves on top & then get to the feeders. Because this guard tilts and is only 14" diameter, I found that an 18" diameter guard worked the best and have not had any squirrel problem for over a year now.
