Essenhaus has been my family’s go to place to eat, whether early in the morning, for daytime meals or family celebrations. We appreciate their atmosphere and more than that their food.This book tells the Essenhaus story and a bit about the Amish.The recipes include a few from the restaurant, one wishes there were more and many from their employees. It includes; snacks-dips-appetizers and beverages, soups-salads and dressings, breads-rolls-cereals and pancakes, meats-poultry and main dishes, cookies and cupcakes, cakes and frostings, pies and candies, desserts and ice cream, canning-freezing and miscellaneous. There are also thoughts and bits of folksy wisdom along the way. Substitutions, hints and definitions are also included.I was disappointed that there is not a recipe for their sweet and sour dressing, but we have enjoyed hot taco salad, chicken breading with rice krispies, sandwich cookies and pecan cake.There are many recipes, no photos, but most recipes are relatively simple.
