1000 verses in praise of Vishnu with Shankara\x27s commenetary With text in Devanagari, transliteration and commentary of Sri Sankaracharya translated into English. Review: Must have for English speaking seekers - A must-have for English speaking readers who want a comprehensive translation of the Sahasranama (Thousand names) Review: Adi Sankara for bhaktas here - This is an excellent value and a nice chanting book. Also included is Sri Vishnu Sahasra Namavali. As a westerner with just a little background in Sanskrit I found I could chant all of Vishnu Sahasranama in roughly 23 minutes. A great help in pronunciation was MS Subbhulaksmi's recording of Sri Vishnu Sahasranama which is available on mp3. Adi Sankara's commentary is summarized in the translation by Swami Tapasyananda, very succinct and easy to follow, not brain-scrambling high philosophy.

Missing verses in the introduction section
As shown in the picture, many verses are missing in the beginning. I am not sure what is the official version is but the book doesn’t match what MS Subulakshmi sings. That said, the rest is good. The devnagri script is legible. Translations and commentaries are available. Meanings for all sanskrit words in English is also listed at the end.

Three Stars
It is a literal translation, not an interpretation of the deeper meaning.

A good beginners translation
This is good book for someone looking for an easy initial translation of the Vishnu Sahasranamam. There is also a transliteration which makes it easy for people who cannot read the Devanagari script. The translations are simple, often two to three lines but the meanings are clear. There is not a lot of time spent on the etymological or philosophical aspect of the namas. This is the reason I say it is a good beginners book. There are some sources (online and print) that have a more detailed description. I think 3.5 stars is a good rating for the book.
