EMI Classics is proud to present a new work from Howard Goodall, winner of this year's Classical Brit Composer of the Year Award! Goodall composed this requiem to help provide solace to the grieving, incorporating a mix of English poetry and the traditional Latin text of the Requiem Mass. The soloists are famed tenor Alfie Boe, soprano Natasha Marsh, and baritone Christopher Maltman.

Review of Howard Goodall's "Eternal Light"
This is a wonderful and very respectful requiem done in a rather uplifting and very inspring tradition. Unlike the major requienms that have been written, this appeals to a wider range of audience, and it is intended to be both a secular and religous approach to understanding grief and the grieving process. It is geared more to those who are left behind dealing with the loss of a loved one. I found that it was very inspiriational and also very spiritual in nature. I could see the beauty of the words, and moreso of the melodies written! The Mass parts are well written, with beautiful melodies that are easy to learn and sing. I especially love the "Agnes Dei"--the melody is very uplifting and very worshipful!! The worship of our God is very much present in all the music. Even the poems that are chosen were written by many Christians who were reflecting on the afterlife and what it meant to them. I would definitely recomment this work and share it with others!! Our parish is going to perform this work this November for Cemetery Sunday to share with those who are grieving and dealing with the loss of people in their lives. I so look forward to people hearing it!! I think it will greatly impact them and bring them closer to the God who created them and loves them!!

A Requiem of Hope
I cannot believe I just recently found this while searching for music by Alfie Boe. I have been involved in Liturgical music for over 40 years and this Eternal Light is just that. It is Hope and comfort offered through some of the most beautiful solos, choral and orchestration that I have ever heard. This is a must for those grieving the loss of loved ones and for you who wish for some serious inspiration. Mr. Boe's Belief is just one of the many truly exceptional pieces.

A beautiful update of the tradtional Requiem Mass, for everyone.
Beautiful modern setting of a traditional requiem mass with well known hymns and great poetry set to music interspersed. I was part of a performance (keyboard), although I had hoped to be in the chorus. Unforgettable experience. Completely accessible to anyone, whether they be reigious or lovers of serious music - or not -, or mourning a loss of someone dear or a whole country gone to war.

Brilliant, profound!
Brilliant Requiem, from another fantastic composer in the long line of outstanding British choral composers. Superb performances (especially the tracks sung by tenor Alfie Boe); a profound, quiet, introspective, beautiful Requiem. Cannot recommend it highly enough. Buy the CD so that you can read the amazing program notes by the composer, including which texts he chose to set to music and why. This is more in the introspectively beautiful style of Faure, rather than the 'flamboyant' Requiems of Berlioz and Verdi. The "Agnus Dei" gave me goosebumps. I am so glad that, through discovering Alfie Boe, I came to discover the Requiem of Howard Goodall. A 'must-buy' for lovers of great and fascinating and utterly beautiful choral music.

Eternal Light
This lovely requiem is our current sermon in song offering for a church service. One of the most beautiful and spiritually inspiring requiems we have sung in many years.

Wonderful voices
Requiems often overpower with thoughts of hell and damnation. Howard Goodall composed a modern requiem that offers solace and thought. The CD offers beautiful music, well recorded, and with liner notes providing words and translations as needed. Highly recommended.

Beautiful, almost ethereal music
Beautiful, almost ethereal music. Each featured voice and the choir were amazing. I am an Alfie Boe fan so I particularly enjoyed his contributions. Agnus Dei was stunning.

Deeply Moving ans quintessentially English in style.
I have enjoyed many of Howard Goodall's compositions and this is no exception.Indeed, it is one of the most satisfying collections I have heard. Like all of his work, it is profoundly moving and is expressed in an understated style that is unmistakably English.I enjoy a lot of sacred music- Bach , Mozart and Haydn for their richness and splendour; Howard Goodall's music is neither derivative nor imitative- it has a simplicity and tenderness that is immediately appealing..In this Collection, my favourites are the settings of the Hymn Lead Kindly Light, the evocative Lachrymosa and the heart rending "Spared"- which uses the agony of September 11, to demonstrate that "love is all there is"Sublimely conceived and beautifully performed, a wonderful addition to my collection

Well I wanted to like it because I like Howard Goodall
Well I wanted to like it because I like Howard Goodall, but honestly it seemed to me to be trying too hard. With the exception of The Lord's my Shepherd ( Vicar of Dibley version) which has become so familiar that it has lost that strangeness, the rest just wasn't for me. Much prefer the Lauridsen - Lux Aeterna which I bought at the same time.

Stunning piece of music.
Stunning piece of music. In places it reminds my of Faure's Requiem in its soft, rounded, subtle beauty.

Howard Goodall is probably best known for his TV work
Howard Goodall is probably best known for his TV work, including the Vicar of Dibley and Red Dwarf. But he can do serious too, as proved by this requiem. It's a little bit sentimental, but isn't that what you want in a requiem? The Lacrymosa is a beautiful piece, with moving words matched perfectly with moving music.

Wonderful Soloists
My husband and I will be performing this work at our next concert with our choral society and it is a beautiful recording with wonderful soloists. It will help tremendously with our private rehearsals at home.

'Eternal Light'shines.
I bought 'Eternal Light' as we were rehearsing it and some of the music was very difficult to sing. But by listening to the brilliant way New College Choir sang it I learned it and enjoyed it so much. It is a beautiful work by Howard Goodall with a brilliant mix of latin and english poetry set to unusual time signatures..

Great requiem and very useful..................
This is such a lovely and 'uplifting' requiem. I purchased the CD mainly because we are learning the requiem with the choir we sing with here in France. Apart from being good to listen to, the CD has been great in helping us learn it too.

Uplifting and sublime
I heard this piece as part of a performance of the ballet by the Rambert ballet company, and was immensely moved by it. It truly lifts the listener to an existence beyond the material world. Buy it! You will never tire of listening to it.
