The Oxford Bible Commentary

Incredibly fast delivery, well packaged, great condition
In more than one respect, outstanding. Texas Book Consignments had (what struck me as) incredibly fast delivery. I bought it on May 18, 2021, and it was at my door early in day today (May 21, 2021). According to Invoice, S/H was $0.00. ($48.99 + tax seemed a great price for such a book in this condition.) Seller, through Amazon, apparently called it "Used - Very Good," but I see only very little difference between what I received, very carefully wrapped, and a carefully handled, brand new book - one corner of one cover might have been bent, just a little bit. It's a very handsome volume, physically. I'd already started (but just barely) reading the exact same book in paperback (same copyright date) and, as expected of a book of this nature from Oxford, it seems to be very scholarly, but also very accessible & readable. I'd recommend getting "The New Oxford Annotated Bible (with Apocrypha)" to go with it. I was a bit disappointed by "The Oxford Companion to the Bible," but others might like it. The Oxford Commentary is very different in its approach (based on what I've read, so far, of each) from that of the HarperCollins Bible Commentary, so if you really want to go all out, you might want the Harper Collins Study Bible AND HarperCollins Commentary, as well as Oxford's version of each. (Try to get the more recent, revised and expanded edition of the HarperCollins Commentary.) One bookseller sold me the older HC Commentary after advertising the new one - a different bookseller.

Very happy with the shipping and the book!
My book arrived several days earlier that expected and was in perfect condition, though was "used."

A Typical Oxford Work of Outstanding Scholarship
Certainly, this is an outstanding, one volume Bible commentary with particularly good introductions, historic context, and exegesis. Although this is a paperback, it is a huge book. Its drawback is the print is small and very light. It is best read in a room with a great deal of light or with a magnifying sheet.

Perfect Study Guide for the Annotated Oxford NRSV!
The Oxford Bible Commentary is a perfect one volume asset to my Oxford Annotated NRSV Study Bible. It has already enhanced my studies for two weekly Bible studies and allows me to thoroughly prepare for our Pastors sermons, giving insights into lectionary texts that illuminate points of sermons even more.

Excellent!!
I love this commentary. I was in need of a newer study aid and chose this one. I was not disappointed. As a full- Bible commentary, there is no need to buy individual commentaries for each book of the Bible.I will warn you that the print was pretty small for me, so I had to get a magnifier. I use this study aid often.

Great study source
So far this seems to be an excellent Biblical commentary. I even think it is better than the Jerome Biblical Commentary.

Excellent, but doesn't review all significant verses of Bible
Excellent commentary and articles. However, it does not include specific remarks on all chapters of the bible. In particular, although there are references to Deuteuro Isaiah in earlier discussion, there are no specific explanations of Isaiah Chapters 43-66. Since I bought this book partly specifically for clarification on some of these verses, I am disppointed.

Es muy útil
Lo uso en paralelo con la "The New Oxford Annotated Bible". Es muy útil para entender mejor el texto bíblico de la versión NRSV en inglés.

A very good commentary; but ……
The content of this book is very solid and well informed, especially when compared to many study bibles, which in some cases offer a clearly tendentious interpretation of the Bible, and in other cases, possibly out of fear of losing market share, tend to cling to old-fashioned ideas since long abandoned in scientific discourse, which the average believer hears in church, and expects to see confirmed in his study bible.Far from ideal, however, is this commentary as a physical book. It is well printed, in a rather small but clear and easily readable letter, but it has two major drawbacks:- it has a very stiff glued back, as a consequence of which it never lies completely open. This makes the reading of the right column on left pages and of the left column on right pages rather unpleasant.- it is very heavy (ca 2400 gr, much heavier than many study bibles), and therefore not easy to handle.A well-bound and lighter new edition of this very valuable commentary, with a reasonable price, is an important desideratum.

Easy to Understand Bible Reference Book
A well written and in-depth explanation of the Bible on a book by book basis. I first utilized this commentary as a library loan. I kept coming back to it so I have finally added it to my own personal library. So glad that I did, you will be as well! Highly recommended for casual personal study. 5 stars out of 5

Bible Commentary Par Excellance!
This commentary is the best I have come across of the one-volume commentaries. It's layout and its approach to each book of the Bible is so very clear and its review of previous commentators is comprehensive, I recently came across it in the library of Tymawr Convent (in Wales) and decided there and then that I must have my own copy. I find it invaluable as background reading for the preparation of sermons and for Bible study. It is what I would call "healthily scheptical" in its approach or, if you prefer, "wide ranging", which is, of course, what you would expect from such editors as John Barton and John Muddiman.
