4th book in the series and still going strong.
I would highly recommend the series. Just finished this book this morning (April 2016).Two things to keep in mind when you are thinking of this series. 1. It was originally written in Russian. 2. It was then translated to English. And it is a testament to the strength of the author and the translator that this series is as good as it is. Rarely are translated books done all that well, usually lazy editor mistakes and obvious incorrect word usage are apparent. Not the case here. The author has a well crafted world, laws of magic that make sense. A good sense of humor and concepts that work. Character development is great.Again, having worked overseas for a number of years in foreign countries, I understand how difficult translating can be. Other than being set (mostly) in Russia, you would never know it was a translation. If you haven't seen the Night Watch and Day Watch movies- read the books first, then the movies. They will make a lot more sense.

Maybe "The Not Quite the Last Watch"
It's January 2009, and I just got my copy through Amazon from a third party vendor, and oh, is it worth getting! While the events of Night Watch, Day Watch, and Twighlight Watch are referred to in this novel, and I wish I had the self-discipline to re-read the prior 3 volumes before tackling this one, I did not.Last Watch really is more of a whodunit or a "who's doing it" than a traditional fantasy format. Investigation of a murder apparently committed by a vampire in Scotland indicates the possiblity of a conspiracy, including and utilizing humans, to attack Others and obtain a magical artifact hidden in the Twilight by the legendary sorcerer Merlin. Anton constantly struggles to mount an effective attack against the conspirators, but difficulty in identifying them and their continual ability to stay a step ahead convinces him their's a traitor in the highest levels of the Day or Night Watches or even the Inquisition. Complicating matters is Anton's contiual wrestling with guilt over some of his prior acts and his foreboding that he has somehow caused this problem.Clues along the way help Anton gradually penetrate the confusion and identify the perpetrators, but that's a long way from anticipating their next moves and stopping them. There is plenty of suspense and action in this "nominal conclusion" to Anton's story. The story ends with room for a sequel, so as a fan, I can only hope.

Write another follow-on book that's not as good as the pervious one - it's better
How can you top a series? Write another follow-on book that's not as good as the pervious one - it's better! Each of Lukyanenko's books grows the plot, strengthens the characters, and adds depth and vibrancy to the series. I hope he hasn't finished writing the series, I could do another 5 books here and not regret reading them!I love the characters, especially Anton, who is easy to identify with - his struggles with what is good and what is evil are fascinating and I ask myself the same questions. I know, I know, it's not meant to be a philosophy session, but boy these books not only entertain, they make you think about life and values.I consider these books so good that I willingly give them as gifts to close friends. I don't do that often! Once you read them, you will want to do the same, you just have to sure them!

I have fallen in love with this series and purchased all five books
I have fallen in love with this series and purchased all five books. I'm waiting anxiously for the sixth. This is a beautiful world of magic and intrigue, I am surprised again and again in some cases by where the plot travels, no matter how I try to predict what's going to happen to Anton next. Throughout this series, I've carried a love/hate relationship with Gesar and Anton. Sometimes I loathe them, sometimes I love them, sometimes I think Anton is a jerk, and then his life is in danger and I'm worried for his life again. As we learn more about the Others, the Inquisition, and the different magical creatures living in secrecy, I look forward to seeing what the next novels bring.

Enjoy this chapter of the story
The characters remain true and the tales are captivating. If you enjoyed the previous books you will also enjoy this one.

Not advisable for young children.
Not all that exciting and almost a predictable ending, does not quiet draw your attention as the Harry Potter series.

One of the best new fantasy writers right now
Lukyaneno is an amazing writer, in my opinion one of the best writers, not only in Moscow but internationally.Sergei has created an amazing universe of fantasy, but don't be mistaken, it is more than your typical good vrs evil book. The "Watch series" is a philosophical history full of intrigue told through Anton Gorodetsky and his peers. It's exciting and at the same time it maintains a balance between mystery and action. Wondering always what happens next.I've read the 5 books in one month and each one was better than the previous one, always leaving you wanting more. You cannot put these books down. You won't regret starting this series

I am a great fan of his work
I am a great fan of his work. He is like a grown up Harry Potter in real time. I love his depth and span of knowledge in world classics, literature, geography, to America television's fictional Scully and Mulder. I like the concept of Dark and Light Others, his characters the way they diverge, come together, and even merge. The Twilight is like parallel universes that only others can see. I look forward to reading his new novel the Sixth Watch.

Wonderful as usual
Chapter 5 is there in the first part but missing from the 2nd part.A Russian friend is letting me know what each chapter starts with in her book as it seems, its just the English ones that have this mistake. The publisher/printer need to be shot for this and all monies returned for not selling the correct product.I give the book 5 stars.I give the Publisher/printer zero for their crappy service.I have just bought the ebook version of this For $3, and lo & behold the missing Chapter is there....WoohooI think the publishers/Printers should have sent this Chapter out to all who bought this book....they should be shot.

Great follow up to a fantastic series
Having read the previous series from the author, I was surprised to see this advertised as I was not aware of his writing it. Needless to say I did not regret getting the Kindle version - better price and easy to read, it was a definite hit. The use of familiar characters makes it easy for the reader to engage with the plot and his writing is as good as ever. Highly recommended to fans and newcomers should read the previous trilogy first to best enjoy it.

The Last Watch
All of the books in this series are simply fantastic. I was having withdrawal symptoms from reading Game of Thrones and Stephen Kings Dark Tower Series. I wasn't sure I would enjoy what I thought was a horror genre. How wrong was I? Firstly, the books are not a horror genre. They are beautifully translated and keep you captured throughout. I love the way Sergei Lukyanenko tells three little stories to solve a bigger mystery.

Another brilliant book by Lukyanenko
All his books are brilliant, of course. I do not rate this as the best of the series myself, but only by a whisker; his standards of storytelling, exploration of morality and ambiguity, and thoughtfulness, continue as high as ever. Will there be more in the series? I do hope so. And will a publisher please translate some of his many other books from the Russian. I cannot imagine him as producing anything less than interesting.

Loved it!
I have read the previous three books in the Trilogy - Nightwatch, Daywatch and Twilight Watch. I have really enjoyed all four books. I got into the books after seeing Nightwatch on Film 4 late one night, I never realised the Russians could make such a fantastic film. The films are different from the books which was a little disappointing but equally great. It is a shame there are not more easy to read books like these.
