does this enclosure support 2.5" drives of size greater than 2tb?

Tested this enclosure with a Samsung QVO series 8TB drive and it only shows a partition of 2TB with the rest of the drive unallocated. GPT was used. When inserted into a different enclosure the drive is displayed with the correct partition size.

I have a WD 500gb hd and im wondering what enclosure would fit it. It measures 4in x 5 3/4in.?

You have 3.5" HDD (desktop PC). This enclosure designed to fit 2.5" HDD (laptop). Therefore it will not fit your HDD.

Do you need usb 3.0 to use?

It uses the type C plug (I think, the USB standards are hard to keep up with!), which can be inserted either "up" or "down", unlike the older style plugs that must be inserted in the correct orientation. My laptop has one of the Type C receptacles and two of the older style receptacles. If your computer doesn't have the Type C receptacle, you can get 'gender adapter' that will allow you to use this device. If you use an Apple device, I'm not sure what kind of problems you might encounter.

Can I use a longer usb cable? Does it have a slot?

The usb cable is attached to the unit. So in order to get a longer cable, you'll need a 'active' usb 3.0 extension cable. There are a few models that are also a "locking version" which would be much safer to prevent accidental disconnections (LINDY 8m USB 3.0 Active Pro Extension Cable, for example). Cheers
