Easy to Set Up; Quirky in Handling Inputs
This system arrived well packed in a shipping container that contained several sub-containers for the receiver, the subwoofer, and the various speakers. A separate bag contained a set of speaker cables and other items.Setup was not terribly difficult, although the instructions are, to say the least, very concise (i.e., brief). Helpfully, the leads for each speaker have a unique color code, with matching color panels on the terminals behind the speakers. The leads for the front speakers (center, left, and right) are plenty long enough. The leads for the surround speakers are barely long enough, and I may end up getting some additional wire in order to run the leads in a more elegant manner. The subwoofer is connected with a single audio cable with an RCA plug on each end, and must be plugged into its own AC power outlet. Somehow the subwoofer can sense when the receiver is on, and powers itself up and down accordingly. There is very little guidance on setting up the system, or explaining what the different surround sound selections actually mean. We're still in a trial-and-error phase on this. With a Blu-Ray disc containing surround sound, the effect is noticeable. I goosed up the surround speakers a click or two.My only real critique -- and this may be something that happens with a lot of receivers -- is that this receiver is very persnickety about its input sources. If the receiver is turned on before the source (such as a Blu-Ray player or Apple TV box), the receiver will not recognize it. It is necessary to turn the receiver off again, then power up the source box, then start the receiver again. That usually fixes the problem. Presumably this is a phenomenon of the annoying HDCP protocol that we must all suffer through. The sound quality is surprisingly good for this price point, and it is wonderful to have a center channel speaker. Previously we were hearing Blu-Ray disks in simple stereo, and many times the dialogue got lost. Now, with the center channel speaker, we can hear dialogue easily. The subwoofer adds a decent amount of "floor" to the sound. The receiver comes with a microphone that can be plugged in for system setup. We have not performed that as yet, but will someday. It will be interesting to see if that makes any difference.

DEFECTIVE OUT OF THE BOX
No sound out of the box. Not even a crackle out of the speakers with the radio on (best way to verify). Onkyo must have no quality control because there was no damage to the box. Now I have to wait almost 2 weeks for Amazon to pick up and up to another 2 weeks until I get my refund after that. Stay away from Onkyo products! Especially this one. No tech support either
