Kalamkari is a type of hand-painted or block-printed cotton textile, produced in parts of South India. The word is derived from the Persian words ghalam (pen) and kari (craftmanship), meaning drawing with a pen. The hand drawing and color block printing is entirely hand worked and done with vegetable dyes. Only natural dyes are used in Kalamkari and it involves multiple steps. These square pillow cases were hand printed in the State of Andhra Pradesh, situated on the country's southeastern cost. The designs depict the artwork of the local community and are printed in small villages. Kalamkari art has been practiced by many families in Andhra Pradesh and over the generations has constituted their livelihood.
