Fate deals a cruel blow to retired detective Jim McClain (James Arness) when his partner and close friend Sid Lammon (Gerald S. O'Loughlin) is brutally murdered. McClain is not only shocked by the senseless killing but frustrated by what he views as the plodding investigative methods of the modern police force. Openly clashing with detectives Harry Gates (Marshall Colt), Jerry Cross (Carl Franklin) and their chief, Edward DeNisco (George DiCenzo), McClain decides the only way to beat 'em is to join 'em. Earning the right to carry a badge again, McClain brings his street-smart, street-tough maverick style of police work, causing chaos in the squad room until his fellow officers see that this old-school rogue is ready to work within the new rules. Notable series guests include Markie Post (Night Court), Michael O'Hare (Babylon 5), Joe Pantoliano (The Sopranos) and Richard Jaeckel (Spenser for Hire).

Addictive Series !
I totally enjoyed watching every single episode. It is well done and fast moving . James Arness was his usual selfโฆ.. finding solutions to problems. Iโm certain Iโll be enjoying watching these over and over again. Great for Gunsmoke fans. His role in these is really different than in Gunsmoke, but his personality the sameโฆ.. kind, considerate and yet smart in finding sensible solutions to difficult situations. The stories are very well written and well acted by all the actors. It is surely well worth having. ๐ค

" Big Jim Is Back!!
"McClain's Law" premiered in 1981, & I remember watching it, & enjoying it. You can find some similarities between Matt Dillon & Jim McClain, but the main theme is Det. McClain's adjustments to new rules & regulations of a modern- day police department. Is it the same caliber of show as Gunsmoke or HTWWW? Nope, but who cares, James Arness is back in these episodes of ML, & that was Good enough for me!

Great Guy...Sorely Missed
Arness is great. I wonder if it was his idea to stop this series because he was obviously having difficulty with his leg. For those who don't know Arness was machine gunned by the Nazis in WWII. I can't be unbiased about this super guy. What a career he had. See "The Thing from Another World" (he was the thing). See "Big Jim McClain" (he was John Wayne's sidekick). He fought giant ants in "Them". I can watch Arness in anything!!!

Mat Dillon is not a city slicker.
It is well dated 1981 like Manex, Matlock. Show is OK not the best writing or acting.

James Arness should have been President.
As a long time fan of James Arness I was thrilled to find this on Amazon. As retired/newly hired lawman Jim McClain there is so much of Marshall Dillon in the character. Always fighting for justice. After watching him play Marshall Dillon on Gunsmoke for 20 years it's a little weird watching him in a different role but he's still wonderful to watch.

A change of setting
I was so used to seeing the excellent James Arness in his iconic role as Matt Dillon in Gunsmoke or his fine performance in How The West Was Won TV series that it took a while to get used to seeing him in 20th century costume. To be honest the series is nowhere near the standard of the other two series mentioned but is always watchable and a couple of the episodes are very good. It uses the device of a retired officer coming back to the force to say things about rising crime and falling standards, as he sees it, which makes some interesting points but never gets in the way of the action.

The greatest series ever told.
I watched this series on TV many years ago and have been waiting for these to come out on DVD, now I have them on disc, its a wonderful series and well acted, its a shame that a lot of series on tv now are not as good, no where near it.I just bought my Daughter it as well, she wont stop watching it. well done team.

Complete series on 4 discs.
Thought it was about James Arness as a lawyer (McClain's Law). I didn't read the description properly. A retired police officer returns to the force after 15 years. Turns out I like it more.
