Black clay from Chamba Tolima is used in restaurants and homes for preparing and serving traditional dishes Its origins can be traced back at least 700 years to vases and pitchers found in pre-Columbian archaeological sites. It is still made in the traditional manner, by families in the village of La Chamba, on the banks of the Magdalena River in Central Colombia. Each piece is hand-crafted using local clays, burnished by hand and fired on-site. The painstaking process and natural materials give the dishes an authentic, distinctive and elegant look. Chamba Pottery heats evenly and is renowned for retaining heat. They are used for the preparation of traditional meals, generally for the preparation of food in a slow way, such as vegetable, which need to retain their color and nutritional properties. They are excellent especially for dry cooking, with very little water or in the oven. Foods cooked in clay pots are tastier. For orders over US 300 we personalize with your last name or your company name in low relief. 100 % Handmade in Colombia Village La Chamba Tolima from clay that contains mica which allows it to withstand heat. PRIOR TO FIRST USE Thoroughly clean with mild detergent to remove any residue that may be present to the firing process. Fill each piece ¾ full of water and place in the oven for 30 minutes at 200 centigrade. This process allows La Chamba items to seal. However, due to porous nature of the pieces a complete seal is sometimes achieved only after items have been used several times for cooking.

Unique item
This is a nice comal the problem that I experienced was the surface. I researched and purchased a bag of calcium hydroxide it applied to the surface well but also stuck to tortillas. I really wanted to like this comal but it was a disaster and entirely too much trouble. Maybe there's a better way of to prevent sticking but I wasn't able to locate Now I'm left holding a 2 lb bag of calcium hydrogen that I will never use.

DO NOT RECOMMEND
I bought this because it is very unique and looks nice. I really liked how it looked in my kitchen!! After the first couple of uses, It started smelling HORRIBLE. I do not know what chemicals, if any, are used but I did not feel safe to keep using this. Buyers, KEEP THIS IN MIND and please be careful. I threw it away because it just did not seem okay to be using this after it released a heavy smell of chemicals.
