A refreshingly different and unconventional approach to painting with watercolours Colours are vibrant and compositions exciting. If you are looking for inspiration and to work outside the box of most watercolour artists then Shirley is the artist for you. You will get more from this DVD if you purchase the book as well. Her style is impressionistic rather than photographic and probably more suitable for those with some experience of painting. She uses a variety of techniques to achieve different effects, a twig being one of the tools she uses most after her brushes. She has quirky ideas of how she interprets what she sees or wants the viewer to see in her work. For example the perspective might change, the size of an object in relation to another may be different and even the colour will be changed as part of her composition In fact she takes risks and breaks all the rules which put many people off working with watercolours. As with any artist you can take what you want from her philosophy, techniques and make it your own. I have every book of Shirley Trevena's but I have wanted the DVD for a while. I was nervous of paying £30 for a DVD but I felt it was great value for money. It arrived yesterday and I have watched it through three times already! Shirley starts by showing how watercolour 'takes' on various papers and explains why she chooses the paper she does. Then the DVD is split into three sections each solving a painting problem - where to start, how to move on from the middle and how to know when a painting is finished. Rather than slavishly copying down what's in front of her, Shirley thinks constantly about the composition on the paper and how colours work and interact with each other. She encourages the use of vibrant paint colours and her style is at once careful and messy. Some parts of the painting are extraordinarily careful; others bleed and bloom as the wet paint crosses boundaries. Great fun and will make me look at watercolour paint in a completely different way.

An excellent DVD.Shirley is an excellent artist and she is happy to share her wide knowledge with us.Using methods and impliments I have never used. I have purchased her books and another previous DVD and feel more confident that I could now improve my own watercolours.A delightful way to learn.

An excellent dvd by Shirley Trevena for anyone interested in exploring a fresh and exciting approach to watercolour painting. A well produced dvd with a fascinating insight into Shirley Trevena's thoughts and methods regarding her artwork. Recommended.

This dvd is fantastic, very generous Travena Travena always original and very generous with explanations and demonstrations to detail, materials, technique, tricks, the best I've seen!
