Are they 2 to 3 pounds each or total weight?

I would say total weight. You'll want to go with the biggest for these to be proportionate to any books you plan to hold. I think we got the 5-6lb ones in blue and they are exactly what we expected. Anything smaller and they look underwhelming. It pays off to read reviews and follow them. It's what convinced me to spend a little more for what I truly wanted. Hope this helps.

are these lined on the bottom to protect the furniture surface?

No they are sent with little rubber sticky circles to put on the bottom. To protect the furniture. They are really pretty but a little on the small size.

How big are the 2-3 lbs and how many books can they hold?

They are about 3" high and 3" wide. Right now, each of mine is holding about 10 books, some hardback, some paperback. I feel that I could add a few more books with no trouble.
