what age is this appropriate for

Naturally, each child is different, but generally this set is appropriate for elementary aged children. The value of this kit is greatly magnified by a teacher or adult that is guiding the learning experience.

How many magnets come in this kit?

My kits are in my classroom, but from my memory there are: 5 small disk magnets and 1 magnetized pole, 3 ball magnets, 1 horseshoe magnet with magnetic keeper, small dish of iron filings, small steel rod and wire for making electromagnets, bag of plastic disks with metal around circumference, the book and a 2.5 inch styrofoam disk for one of the experiments in the book, also has a cardboard magnetic field measurement chart. Does this have any experiments meant to convey the concept of magnetic pull force?

Yes, it definitely has, with different types of magnets. Overall a very well done and instructive experiment set for youngsters.

What is the strength of the electromagnet?

I'm not sure if you're looking for a specific measurement. If so- I don't know. The biggest magnet is about twice as strong as a kitchen magnet. Some of the others are about the same power. It was easy for my then six year old to use and he enjoyed it.

Great learned, no mess

We have loved Thames and Kosmos in other kits and this one is a hit too. I was considering getting my son iron filings to learn more about magnetism when I found this set. They put iron filings in a thin clear plastic case where a kid can learn from them, but they are contained. The other stuff is great too. My son especially likes the floating rings.

Broken on Arrival but Enjoyable

We ordered this for my 6 year old to share a science experiment with her class. Like other people mentioned, the horseshoe magnet was broken upon arrival and it's super small and a pretty weak magnet. She did however love the magnet rings and magnetic balls so she mainly used them. The book has some nice information. Overall, my daughter liked it and it wasn't too expensive but I hate receiving broken items.

Perfect for learning about magnets

My kids had a blast with this science kit. We homeschool, so we do a lot of project based learning. This kit was a key part of learning about magnets, and the kids had fun playing with it. It's very durable, and a great value for the money. Mine didn't have missing parts.
