Joy of Fearing God, The

This is a very important topic for the Christian life. The author describes the way to have a proper fear of God and through God's attributes show us that it is a must for all believers. He also describes how to live this fear in a biblical way for the Christian to grow in faith and enjoy the presence of our God. This is an excellent study (even with a very good study guide included) about this very forgotten topic. Another excellent resource is 'The Forgotten Fear...' by Albert N. Martin. This is a must read book!

How important is it 'To Fear God'? One of the chapter titles is 'The Soul Of Godliness'.Jerry Bridges believes (as do John Murray and I)that 'The Heart And Soul Of Godliness' is the fear of God.-Mr.Bridges quotes John Murray "The fear of God is the soul of godliness.That is,the fear of God is the animating and invigorating principle of a godly life." Is holiness important in the life of a believer?God commands his people to be holy because he is holy.If 'Fearing God' is the essence of holiness,that helps us to see something of its importance.How influential should godly fear be in our daily lives?If we want to glorify God and desire to live for Him we must have knowledge of who God is and what He desires form us-Proverbs 1:7a 'The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge...'.-"It is the fear of the Lord that should determine our fundamental outlook on life."The author contends that one of the principal parts of fearing God is obedience to His commands.One of the evidences that someone fears God is wholehearted submission to His Word-"...and it is a conscious obedience to God's commands as given in His Word that constitutes godly fear."In the second section of this book Mr.Bridges considers aspects of who God is (some of His attributes-holiness,wisdom,love).One cannot fear an unknown god.The knowledge of God in His being and nature is the foundation of every doctrine.The greater one's knowledge of 'The Triune God',the more you will be enabled,by His grace,to walk in godly fear.We often try to categorize things to help us better understand them.Are any of God's attributes more important than the others? Bridges puts to rest that type of thinking with this assertion- "...we should not exact any of God's attributes above the others .All of them in their infiniteness,are essential to his being." To any who might not agree with this contention,what part of God's being or character could be removed,without un-deifying him?Jerry Bridges 'The Joy Of Fearing God' along with A.N.Martin's 'The Forgotten Fear' are two of the most helpful books,on this important Biblical teaching that have been published in our generation.

As facilitator of a womens Bible Study group I'm experiencing changes in my own life due to this book! Jerry Bridges has a very clear way of sharing what the Lord has revealed to him - which in turn affects the reader in a very power way. The Joy of Fearing God has opened up new ground for many of the women involved in this study. Old beliefs developed through legalistic teachings of our past are being torn down and replaced with the truth about what it means to fear God and experience joy in doing so! We truly are on a journey together, learning about the reverential awe, admiration and amazement due to Almighty God whom we call Abba Father!

Biblically sound book. Love the author. Easy read. I buy these as gifts for my sisters in Christ cause I think everyone needs to read this at least once.

The Joy of Fearing God by Jerry Bridges takes readers on a journey they will never forget. Bridges paints a clear and compelling portrait; one that promotes reverence and clearly outlines the necessary ingredients in a relationship that rightly honors the God of the universe. The Joy of Fearing God is a typical Bridges book. It exalts Christ and humbles the creature.

The fear of God is very important to a believer. I do not think very many people understand that it is a good thing. Jerry Bridges does an excellent job. If you are not closer to God after reading this book you should ask God to help you examine yourself and get into scripture more. Jerry Bridges writes books that are easy to read and packs so much scripture to back up what he writes about. I have read all his books and highly recommend them. Some I have even re-read.

This book is really life-changing. The insights are like gems hidden and now revealed. The bible verses/stories are themselves discovered treasures.

Every line in this book is so thought provoking. I have so much of this book underlined or marked. I will be rereading this many times & sharing info that has impacted me. Worth every cent & more.
